Commission: Sonic and MLP - Paws Off!

Commission time again boys and girls. My good pal my good pal snicketbar came over to see if I could cram one more commission onto my body count this year. Who was I to say no? Especially when it’s an excuse to draw two of my favorite characters; Sonic and Blaze.

But before I go off on my regular tangent, let’s put this one into perspective. This commission was ordered up as a piece of chapter art for SB’s “Battle for Equestria” story. It takes place in chapter three, so if anyone needs to brush up on their reading or is looking for some extra context to this image, you should head on over and give it a go. I’ll even go as far as to drop a nice convenient link to the story!

Okay, onto the picture itself. I think this was my first time drawing Vinyl Scratch. She seems to be one of the more popular background characters in the pony-verse, so I figured it was only a matter of time before I got around to scratching her off my list. Amusingly enough, to fit the Halloween (or Nightmare Night, as pony fans seem to have taken to calling it) I even got to throw her into something of a cat costume. It’s an amusing play on words at least and she does look pretty cute pawing at Sonic.

Sonic is his usual upbeat self, and I always have a blast drawing the Blue Blur. I got to add in his Vampire getup Sega gave to him a while back and that was pretty cool too. I love the way he came out and how he is interacting with the pony above him. The two are a tangled mess, but that is what tends to happen when you get pounced on out of the blue.

Switch to the characters in the background, and you get a much different vibe. Three ladies, three equally uninviting glares. Rarity’s sporting a rather complex Witch’s getup, complete with the veil and stockings. She’s pulling the look off nicely in my opinion, but even that veil fails to hide the daggers she’s staring in Vinyl’s direction. Twilight isn’t too far off that homicidal glare herself. She’s visibly taken aback by the actions of the pony before her and she looks like she is ready to do something about it. Her costume takes its cue’s from Sonic’s. In fact, it’s virtually the same, right down to a pair of red eyes. Blaze’s costume will look familiar to Sega fans. She’s rocking the garbs of a fan favorite kitty who might not be as well-known as the lavender princess. With a black wig and a quick change of fur color, she makes a quite convincing Honey the Cat – Although Blaze won’t be fooling anyone about who she really is if she keeps walking around casting fireballs. LOL That kitty’s got claws.

I went back to some tried and true comic book tricks for the shading. The foreshadows on the faces of the girls might be my favorite little go-to move in paint when I need some points. It sells the venom dripping off their emotions so well. Are they jealous? scorned? vengeful? Some unholy combination of the three? Ah, you’ll get no spoilers from BroDogz. You’ll have to go and read the story to find out.

Another thank you is in order for Snicketbar. You keep coming back for more or my commissions. Maybe it’s because you like my work, or maybe it’s because I laced them with an illegal additive to make them horribly addictive, but either way your continued business is much appreciated. I think this is the first image I’ve done for this Story. I’ve done quite a few chapter arts for the story that came ahead of this one named “Chaos In Equestria”, so I guess it’s a big honor that you like my work enough to jump the shark and have me test the waters in both of your stories. ^^

Anyway, the holidays are here. I’m sure to be distracted by my annual tradition of eating too much and attempting to food coma in a position that isn’t 100% compromising and can be used to blackmail me 10 years down the road… sigh.

But enough about my problems! Let’s talk about the gift that keeps on giving! Of course I am talking about a commission from good ol’ BroDogz.
