Yeah. Anime is “ADR”, I think, where you have to match the lip “flaps” and say your lines in the time allowed, and the animation is already finished.
Pony and other DHX shows are “pre-lay”, meaning the dialogue is recorded before the animation. (Source: Trevor Devall’s podcast, Voiceprint. He and his guests, the Canadian VA crew, would talk about their pre-lay shows. If they were lucky they’d maybe get a picture of the character they’d be voicing. Sometimes they had to wing it without a picture. They didn’t get to see the animation until well after the fact.)

That’s actually how it’s always been done in cheapo animation (like all the classic Hanna-Barbera productions), and it was the industry standard for TV anime until fairly recently; the animation would play on a screen in the voiceover studio with colored bars underneath indicating which character was speaking and how long they had to read a line, and whoever’s color was up would say that line and try to time it to the bar length.

I think the Voltron callout with ponies was a little overkill for the premiere, personally.
