This is how I see it.
 
Purple armor w/ amethyst chestpiece and blue praetorian crest: Commanding officer
 
Golden armor w/ sapphire star chest piece and blue crest: soldier/ elite guard
 
Golden armor w/ amethyst chest piece and blue crest: royal courier
 
Black armor w/ sapphire star and silver crest: Night guard (Celestia)
 
Dark violet/ royal purple/silver armor w/ rounded sapphire and ridged helmet: royal guard (Luna)

Let’s see here, his armor is more regal and decorated than the any of the other guard/soldiers (it’s royal purple instead of gold which I can assume is a sign of command).

He wears the armor of a commanding officer. Also there’s fanart with him in the line of duty. Being captain of the guard doesn’t just limit him to Canterlot.

Maybe he’s been in some wars and he doesn’t want her to see what he’s been through. He just got married, they had a stressful time with the Changelings and I’m guessing he’s traumatized by yelling at his sister (I would be traumatized if I suddenly snapped at a sibling I was deeply attached to) he doesn’t want her to be even more stressed out because she’ll probably be reading war journals about the horrors of combat. And before you say, he’s just captain of the royal guard, he’s also a commanding officer.
