Er… I mean… I was pushing that idea for a project of mine which will probably be coming out onto the Internetz in a year or two.
Well, at least now I know I’m not crazy for following that line of reasoning.
How about this.
Pinkie Pie is Spike’s mother! And the real reason why Luna went to Ponyville is to retrieve this egg and deliver it to Celestia, who will use Starswil’s time/space magic to send the egg into the past, so Twi would be able to hatch it during her exam, thus closing and stabilizing the time loop!
Why? Cause Pinkie Pie, that’s why!
What made you think otherwise?
While we’re planting epileptic trees, how about: Pinkie Pie is actually Spike’s older half-sister, her father Mr Pie in his younger wilder days hooked up with a female dragon and they had Pinkie. After birth, Pinkie (who appeared outwardly-pony) was raised by Mr and Mrs Pie as their joint daughter. Spike was born later. :)
Or, Spike and Pinkie are closer friends than we know, and eggshell color is hereditary…
