This scene always reminds me of a spell from the Exalted Role Playing Game:  
DEATH OF OBSIDIAN BUTTERFLIES  
“Calls forth a cascade of sculpted obsidian butterflies with razor-sharp wings. Their wingspans vary from an inch across to almost a foot. Flashing over the character’s shoulders and past her sides in a glassy black torrent, they slash through the air in a pattern 30 yards wide, 100 yards long and 10 yards high.
