Well, I’m sorry, I only watched the Gen 3 anime. I only know most of my gen 3 knowledge from websites. So, I guess the death toll in gen 6 is only 2. So let’s count all of the deaths in the series so far.
Gen 4: Those 2 people in the old Chateau, and Pokemon Hunter J: 3
Gen 5: The girl in the Strange House: 1
Gen 6: The old people I mentioned earlier: 2
So in total, we got 6 deaths!

Boy did I make a lot of typos there.
Anyway I Sapphire and have played it, there was no hints to his illness being deadly, infect it’s hinted that the bound with pokmeon worked far better for him then the cleaner air of Verdanturf Town did.
Umm he’s in all the gen 3 games, yes is is ill in them but with you helping him out to get his first pokemon and the bound he builed with the Ralts(later Gardevoir/not Gallade) and the fun he has battling you it’s hinted at he’s a lot healthy.
In the XY games, an old man dies after you let him keep a level 5 or under Pokemon, in the anime, an old lady dies, in Pokemon Emerald, they hint that Wally is a sick dying child!
