Maybe Lyra’s just a normal winged unicorn that doesn’t have any sort of power or longevity and is just trying to fit in with regular ponies.
 
She maintains an illusion spell at all times to hide her wings. She got enough shit growing up, being called a “freak” by bullies.

Lyra was an alicorn for about 1,000 years and did something that made her lose her alicorn-dom just before season 1 began. That’s totally what happened.

There’s something I’m lost on. From the wording in the comic, it makes it look like she was talking about 1000 years ago, and I heard somewhere(albeit that’s most likely unreliable) that Lyra was supposed to be someone else, entirely.
 
So was I reading the line wrong, or something? Was alicorn Lyra powerless against NMM, in ancient times? Should they have sent ancient-times alicorn Berry Punch, instead?

Eh, I’ve seen way more anime-ish then this.  
I’ve seen fanart more anime-ish that doesn’t get a single complaint, in fact. I’ll even say I like some of Tony’s art for the comic, even if he’s not my favorite either.
 
I do wonder if this was done on purpose just to see if fans complain about it. :P
