Haven’t played it yet, (aside from the DS game demo from the Wii Nintendo Channel) but hear it’s good. I hear it brought back being able to play Super Sonic in normal levels once you unlock him.

It depends on who you ask, some still enjoy them, but I haven’t really played the new ones much so I can’t judge. Generations was pretty cool, though I only played it briefly.

Yeah, that was a good BGM. The US one was good to though. It’s hard for me to say which one is better.

I remember Sibsy (famed storyboarder for MLP:FiM) said “Sonic CD with the American soundtrack” is her favorite Sonic game.

@Beau Skunky
Yeah, the USA soundtrack did have some excellent tracks, Stardust Speedway’s Good & Bad Futures especially, though I do prefer the Japanese soundtrack more. Ever listen to Quartz Quadrant’s Good Future theme? That’s awesome.

Yeah, though I wouldn’t completely write-off the USA soundtrack, as it had some cool themes to, I felt. It’d be nice to have both versions. (Heck the 3DS version of “Sonic the Hedgehog,” lets you play both versions of the game if you wish. Same with the other 3D Sega Genesis games.)

I kinda prefer “Toot Toot Sonic Warrior” over “Sonic Boom” though.

@Beau Skunky
Maybe. Another complaint I have with Gems is that American players like myself can’t experience the Japanese soundtrack of Sonic CD. I can understand that it’s the Japan soundtrack, but it would still be nice to have as an in-game option. That music is fricking awesome.

I think they just wanted to round out the collection, ‘cause just having 3 main games wouldn’t be much compared to “Sonic Mega Collection.”

Admittedly, some of the Game Gear games weren’t that good, particularly “Sonic Spinball” which was quite hard to control compared to the Genesis version. (But oddly easier then the Genesis version, sense it was easier to cheat death in it.)
Game Gear Sonic 2 was also quite frustrating, (It’s a completely different game from the 16-bit Genesis one BTW) especially hang-gliding in it.

Well, to be fair, they didn’t emulate “Tails Adventure” well in Sonic Adventure DX, which oddly had a very dark color contrast for some reason making it harder to see. (Or at least in my copy of the game.) So I didn’t mind them rereleasing the Game Gear games, just so I could get a better version of that game. (And save points for the others.)
“Tails Adventure” IMO is the best Game Gear Sonic title.
AP_Epikyur

@Beau Skunky
Yeah, really. They could’ve replaced those Game Gear games (after all, I already unlocked them all in Sonic Adventure DX) with the ones they had to cut out. Or better yet, make a Gems Collection Plus that has the removed games on it.

Yeah, I heard they also considered putting the “Sega Sonic” arcade game in there to, but didn’t because they couldn’t figure out a good way to emulate the “trackball” controls with a control stick, and such.

Also, further annoying… They took out the “Streets of Rage” games (which are great BTW) out of the American version of the “Sonic Gems Collection” game. Even the Nintendo Power magazine reviewer who was reviewing the game didn’t understand why they did that.
(Some think it was to avoid a “T”-rating, yet ironically that same year the “E-10” rating just came out, so it likely would’ve only gotten an E-10 rating. The 3DS version of “Streets of Rage” only got an E-10 rating.)

Oddly, that’s one of the few Sonic games that have NEVER gotten an official rerelease. (Aside from on the GameTap service.) Apparently, it was planned to be included in the “Sonic Gems Collection” 2005 game disc compilation, (there was even an entire page of artwork dedicated to the game in it’s “extras” section) but wasn’t, apparently ‘cause it was taking to long for them to make the emulation program for the game.

Also, it’s the closest thing to a “Knuckles” solo game we ever got, seeing how he got top-billing, and Sonic wasn’t in it.

@YukoAsho
Well, 32X has Knuckles Chaotix. It doesn’t hold a candle to Sonic CD but it’s kinda-sorta decent I guess?

LUNAR: The Silver Star and LUNAR: Eternal Blue are amazing 2D RPGs, and some of the few traditional JRPGs outside of Phantasy Star that Genesis fans could brag about to their SNES-fan friends.

The system also had Popful Mail (a great side-scrolling action-RPG), Shining Force CD, SILPHEED, Final Fight CD (The only version with all levels and enemies, as well as 2P support, available for home consoles until the PS2), After Burner III, and Robo Aleste.

It’s true that the selection of great games was very slim on the Sega CD compared to the Genesis base unit, but to say that only Sonic CD was noteworthy on the system is a bit disingenuous.

Now the 32X, that’s a different story. To quote the AVGN, “The 32X is the real deal. It sucks. GOD, it sucks.”
