I got the impression Big Mac’s problem was more with balance than with weight. Also, the cake was actually Mr. and Mrs. Cake’s, Pinkie was just taking it to Canterlot for them.

Well, yeah, I find it pretty ridiculous too, I’m pretty sure at least some earth ponies would slip up. The bigger a group, the harder keeping a secret is.
I’m just joining in speculation on what earth ponies do have and don’t necessarily hide.

I have no doubts about that. I just find the idea that the entire, huge and dispersed, Earth Pony population would be all in on this conspiracy to pull one over on the other two races.
Big Mac pulled a house. Magic drugs or not, I think it’s safe to say at least some earth ponies are unreasonably strong. Big Mac and Maud Pie are the most obvious ones.
Is kind of ridiculous. Innate strength and a love of good, tilled earth not only makes sense, but is cannon.
Oh right!
Do remember that Cheerilee and Big Mac were both hopped up on Magic Drugs that episode. Some of their displays of Super-Strength could be a side-effect of that.

When did this happen?
Cheerilee, a schoolteacher (a profession not usually known for incredible feats of physical strength), managed to punch through a solid wall. She didn’t just make a hole, she demolished the whole wall with one strike!
Now why is that Maud is able to pummle a boulder in half in mid air? Simple. Maud is a fucking badass who does not have time for your shit.
If I knew I was gonna hit it I would have gotten one off of the mouthpiece blogs.
