Okay, so it’s more of a wish fulfillment/power fantasy thing. I guess it makes sense to call the character anon, then.
And let me tell you; I probably wouldn’t have finished the story if the character was called say, Smarty Hooves or John Smith. I’d have been preoccupied with who/what the character is, not what is happening to him.

it means that you can imagine yourself as the character. it does not need to waste any words on who this character is or why’s he there, just the name already establishes that what the general setting will be, letting everyone move on to the actual interesting part of the story.
