it is an itnersting concept but has no teeth to it. instead of making a world like mlp has, they just make an environment. a vaccuum.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Although, I do admit that there is no explanation as to how the famous monsters managed to produce offspring. My answer to this is simple:

DON’T THINK SO HARD ABOUT IT. IT’S JUST A SHOW AND A TOY LINE, SO RELAX.

Wow, thread is horribly off-topic here. But seeing how we’re riding the derailment train, I might as well give my two cents.

I am a fan of Monster High as well as MLP, and I can tell you for certain that as formulaic as MH is, at least it’s incredibly creative in its details. They actually take great care in designing new characters and giving each of them interesting backstories (even more so if you read the diaries that come with the dolls). And trust me when I tell you, it is a million times better and more interesting than Equestria Girls.

Sure, one might argue that MH give monsters and their stories a bad name, but the whole “teen monsters in school” genre isn’t anything new. Remember that one Scooby Doo movie where Scooby and Shaggy are teaching at an all girl’s school for monsters? And then there’s that short-lived cartoon series “Gravedale High” from the early 90’s. MH just takes the concept and makes it more appealing towards teeny-boppers.

(Not the mention, the dolls themselves are gorgeous. Seriously, look at one of them and tell me that that’s not the standard EQG dolls need to step up to.)

Ah. Okay, now I can understand why classic movie fans would be outraged. Especially since both the Creature and Invisible Man died at the end of their stories, yes?

At least there’s no “Child of the Fly”, right?

Right?

I was talking about the ones who are half monster, half human. They always wimp out with some excuse. I remember there was a thread on a classic movie forum about the franchise and people were aghast at the offspring of the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

And no, they’re said to be direct offspring of famous monsters most of the time, somehow the Invisible Man had a son.

They’re crap and vapid, like every explanation for the toys. They don’t even try.

Ah. Are the DVD movies interconnected or stand-alone? And are characterisations consistent among them? One reason I considered the magazines inferior to the novels is because the characters in the magazines struck me as being rather… insipid (even vapid) in comparison.

As for the ‘could only exist in one way’ bit, yes, I can see that with zombie-like characters or the ghost-based characters , but aren’t several others simply members of monster families (e.g. werewolves, vampires, etc)?

MH has like, six or seven DVD movies. The newest one coming out is pretty much their response to Equestria Girls, a lot of horse inspired things in it.

I don’t like how they always skirt around the fact that these abominations could only exist in one way, but they wimp out on it. Come on, one of the new characters is a goddamn zombie/unicorn hybrid and it’s because his body “fused together.” Please.

Last I heard a live action movie by Universal has been in development hell for years, might be the last push for the franchise. Always has seemed fly by night to me, and EqG is really giving it a run for its money because toy sales matter less now.

Wait, watched? I only know about Monster High through the toyline, novels and occasional magazine. Of the three, the magazines left me with the poorest impression. I hadn’t realised they had a tv show too.

@Itsthinking

From what little I’ve seen of Monster High outside of the novels (which, again, I rather liked), I’m inclined to agree with your ‘decent toys, lousy media’ comparison.

To be fair, even the people I know who are really into Monster High are only in it for the toys. It’s kind of the antithesis of FiM: absolutely garbage media, but decent toys.

Mattel’s gonna have fun trying to do that in the next decade or so.

#1 Kids are stupid.
#2 Kids think history began the day they were born.
#3 Kid these days think they’re the center of the Universe.

As for Monster High, I tried watching it once but had to turn it off once I saw how vapid and formulaic it was, it doesn’t hold a candle to MLP: FiM.

Well, not having read any of the books or watched any of the movies in question, I still think it’s safe to say The Hunger Games series is better than the Twilight series, though that’s not a terribly high bar to clear. My impression is that The Hunger Games is actually quite good, if (possibly) somewhat overrated.

I sense we won’t be able to convince each other, so let us at least unite in our hatred of Twilight.

Not the pony Twilight. I thought I should stress that.

I haven’t read the Hunger Games. Are they any better than Twilight? I’ve heard mixed reviews.

Hahahahahahaahahahahahahahahaha!

That reminds me of something I recall reading years ago during Britney Spears’ boomtime. Some girl listened to the Beatles and accused them of ripping Britney off, since she thought Britney’s cover was the original.

@Itsthinking

Depending on what you’re looking at, Monster High actually has some redeeming features. I thought the novels were quite good, myself.

I always more assumed people who bitched and complained about it’s esistance were 100 times more common and annoying and I’m honestly sick of seeing them. I get it, you hate a thing that lots of other people hate, you’re not special, now shut up, and why not make different jokes for once. Jeez.
