I think Discord is incredibly intelligent, he just really didn’t get the gist of the whole friendship thing, since it was, until his recent friendship with Fluttershy, a completely alien concept to him. I like to think that he ultimately accepted Lord Tirek’s request to be partners because he knows that on some level, he desires power, but his friendship with with Fluttershy was more important to him, so he had to sacrifice his aspirations for power because of it. He assumed that with Tirek, he could have the best of both worlds, and have a good friend along with ultimate power and not have to give up one for the other. Because of his relative inexperience with friendship, he chose a bad friend, because those intent on world domination aren’t usually the people that make good friends.
I think it’s obvious he knows a great deal about all of the elements except for the magic of friendship, since he was able to pick the correct moments out of the journal before the Mane 6 were. My guess is that he didn’t really understand Twilight’s element because he’s never experienced the way virtues like Honesty, Loyalty, ect. contribute to true friendship. Except for Fluttershy’s element, but it was easy enough for him to be led astray regardless.
At first, I preferred Discord as a villain, sort of Q meets the Joker, But after Flutter On, I became more open to the concept. Many fanfics stated he was a friend, family or lover to the princesses, but canon stated he never had any friends, and although he finds the concept alien, he realises that he was never appreciated all of his life.
I tend to view Discord as a child with the powers of a god, throwing a tantrum if things don’t go his way, and using the world as his own playground, with no one to give him time out. Once he realises that friendship means more than he thought, he began to restrain himself, but still used his powers to troll people without actually hurting them, the only one who he would never hurt was the only person to give him a chance, Fluttershy.
As it turns out, Discord isn’t really a god, just a being with unimaginable power, and is otherwise just as vulnerable as any flesh and blood creature, just as the Princesses are.
Seeing that he had betrayed his friends, and being betrayed himself by Tirek afterwards, caused him to realize that this is what he was doing to people all along, and as a result, he would refuse to become the monster that Tirek had, all those years ago. Twilight forgiving him sealed the deal, and (inadvertently maybe) literally gave her the key to save the world.
I felt bad for him. His own betrayal, and Tirek’s betrayal completely broke him, and it’s near impssoble to do that to somebody like Discord. I liked that one moment where he stuck up for Fluttershy to, which helped show how bad he felt, and showed he does care about her. (And her friends.)
From the looks of that scene it looked like Discord was willing to accept his fate for being a traitor, before Twilight showed him mercy.
Nope, I did as well
No, it’s not only you, I too felt really really sorry for him. He already made the difficult and for him painful decision to turn his back onto his only true friends and then he gets betrayed by the only “friend” he had left.
I actually like him a lot more after the finals.
In my head I feel like he felt like the biggest douche ever after what happened.
