At first glance it totally looks like a retcon, but I’m not so sure they didn’t set it up deliberately so that they could use it as a plot point later. Not necessarily for Tirek in particular, but just as a general delayed opportunity. They specifically had Twilight say, “But if he’s here, then all the ancient evil creatures that have been imprisoned there could escape and destroy Equestria!”, after all.
…Also, there was another empty platform in that last shot. Door may still be open on that opportunity.
I like it because now, Cerberus is more than a weird non sequitur.
Him just randomly showing up to wreak havoc made very little sense in IAT, but now it actually becomes a part of a wider narrative. And they didn’t have to change anything to make it work.
Kudos to them, and I actually called that this would happen among my buddies, so I’m double happy.
I am very doubtful that they planned this from S2, but I will say that was a great way to say “okay, how can we say Tirek escape… oh yeah, we’ve got a nice plot hole riiiiiigh here!”

It really was awesome!
I was literally not expecting that like at all.
