Fair enough.
The problem in this world is that both sides are not criticized for it equally.
There’s a way to not believe in god without being pretentious. It’s called not talking about it every goddamn second and trying to start fights with religious people. The goes for the religious people themselves.
Then you shouldn’t be defending that quote.
Enough to raise concern?
No. The group of people who are unapologetic about their atheism even when a bunch of religious people try to paint them as terrible human beings.
What “group of people?” You mean the group of people who reach a state of ecstasy at the thought of their own intelligence?
Any intelligent person knows that stereotypes are not universal. However, the way the meme attacks atheists could have more influence than it should.
Which kind of baffles me that it’s gone memetic. Now I feel its going to become another strawman tactic.
Which is why I am fucking annoyed to death when a straw-man is used to discredit a group of people, since the argument isn’t about the substance any longer, but just a bunch of childish character-attacking.
That’s probably the only thing going against the guy. Otherwise, he really didn’t say anything too inflammatory, or that should be.
Literally all logic, reasoning and facts go out the window because hey, here’s a picture of an unattractive overweight guy wearing a very specific hat.
From my perspective, I think a large part of the scrutiny is the fact that it’s from the mouth of a teenager and is stroking his own ego. I can’t even go on the actual reddit post since it’s been removed.
That makes a lot of sense, straw-mans galore.
A lot of people do get really worked up over atheists still. As an atheist myself I aim not to brag about being one, but also not be apologetic for believing in no god. No reason to sugarcoat your beliefs.
Really what’s going on here is that this whole fedora shaming meme was created as a sort of strawman for people to use against atheists, or against MRAs. By this point it’s encompassed everything from the neckbeard stereotype to ‘nice guys’ and whiteknights.
I see.
Well, I’m glad you can respect beliefs no matter if it’s different from yours.
Personally, I don’t see that the quote should be met with such scrutiny- the guy isn’t really insulting religious PEOPLE so much as the concept of religion itself. Some people see it as douchebaggery, but really all it is boils down to a guy being somewhat proud of his aversion to religion.
The definition of “faith” is “a strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.” It looks to me like the guy who posted the quote was simply trying to remind everybody of that, if in a rather condescending manner.
I probably should have chosen a different description since everyone’s taking it too seriously. :/
Ah, well.
Sorry, I didn’t fully show the whole quote, here’s the whole quote in it’s entirety:
“Just to be clear, I’m not a professional ‘quote maker’. I’m just an atheist teenager who greatly values his intelligence and scientific fact over any silly fiction book written 3,500 years ago. This being said, I am open to any and all criticism.
‘In this moment, I am euphoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my intelligence.’”
This was posed on r/atheism…it got far more downvotes than upvotes. I’m not atheist, and your welcome to your beliefs but if you’re getting downvoted to oblivion from your peers, you’re doing something wrong.

Oh, okay.
Clearly there isn’t anything wrong with not believing in a god, so I guess it comes across as extremely arrogant? That’s what I see from that quote.
Basically it’s an athiesm meme. It’s based on this quote:
‘In this moment, I am euphoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my intelligence.’
Due to it’s cringworthyness it’s lumped with fedoras.
Op is happy at the meta joke
As BgP # 17 pointed out, Amish Paradise. Just connect the dots to pinkie pie’s history
We can only know her position or her momentum, not both?
