Actually, that same site gave other equally old games like “Pac Man,” “Donkey Kong,” “Kid Icarus,” “Xevious,” “Burgertime Deluxe,” and “Sky Kid” pretty good scores/reviews regardless. So it’s kinda baffling they didn’t like the “Balloon Fight” games, as they’re just as good as those games IMO. (Maybe even better then some of ’em.)
But yeah, even the old simple games can be good.
To expect a “Stellar” review on games made in the late 80’s/early 90’s is a long wait. It’s Balloon Fight/Kid. It never needed something complex or over-the-top to make it deep. As Yahtzee would say: Sometimes I miss the old ways of storytelling. Eat Pills. Avoid ghosts. That’s it.
I don’t know, the fan game looks more graphically advanced the a GB game, and I’m assuming they had to make the physics from scratch, so I’ll cut them some slack. (It’s still fun.)
I must add, “Balloon Kid” is a pretty underrated game, (love the music to) I got it for 3 bucks for my 3DS off the Eshop. It’s just as good as the original Balloon Fight, only it takes the BF formula, and puts it into a sidescrolling platformer form, making it a bit more unique. I also like how it reuses the BF bonus games, and “Balloon Trip” minigame.
I actually got a li’l peeved that “Nintendolife” website gave both “Balloon” series games a bad score/review…
I noticed that too, playing Balloon Kid afterward. I wonder if it’s because Balloon Kid had a bit of extra stage space compared to PBT, having programmed with the right amount of room?
Thankies. Anyways, the physics aren’t quite as good as “Balloon Fight,” (and you don’t seem to get enough lift from one button tap like the old game) but this is a good fan attempt at recreating the “Balloon Trip” mini-game from that game.
z/x to float, arrow keys to direct. Pop balloons while avoiding hazards.
Also, been waiting for somebody to make this. :) Love Balloon Fight. The Gameboy sequel “Balloon Kid” was pretty good to.
