Twilight can travel in time, why not Discord?
Presumably there are rules that even he needs to follow, or he’d be rewriting his own history so he never loses, but I don’t think it makes Discord OP to make him better at a skill we’ve seen Twilight has.
On the other hand comic writers seem to overpower him by giving him ability to travel in TIME. His next comic is about him taking Fluttershy and CMC into past.

Sounds interesting and does fit the bill…Though, it does sound like an excuse to keep a very powerful character on the downlow. (Like, how he’d be able to solve most of their problems himself.)
Yeah, I’m currently working on something like that. I even gave him his own army of cultists. (An artist friends of mine drew them up for me.)
There’s one I’m aware of where a team of approximately 20 ponies have to travel to another world to prevent the war from coming to Equestria. Discord tries to prevent it by himself, is nearly consumed by his own dark side (or something, maybe the dark side of chaos) and is pulled back from the brink by Pinkie (not with superpowers, she talks to him and reminds him who he is). After that, he essentially splits himself up amongst the party, so he’s not physically present exactly but he’s individually protecting all of them from the Warp.
That one, I was willing to buy. Discord being unable to stand up to the corrupting influence of pure malevoleance without the help of his friends fits the theme of MLP and doesn’t screw with the character badly. Also, Discord jumping into a situation assuming that his powers will be a match for it and getting his head screwed with instead totally sounds like Discord.
But even still, I would like to see something where he’s one of his more badass variants and he can actually stand up to the Warhammer chaos gods.
Discord isn’t omnipotent. He’s close, but not there. (Or else he would have known about the Elements, what they did, and whatnot.)
Yeah, a lot of them seem to miss Discord’s core attributes.
In my own stories dealing with him (Love Needs No Reason) I try to hold on what makes him…him. It’s actually simpler than you would think, so it kind of astounds me that they would miss it.
It’s most likely the authors wanted to make the other side (warhammer) the more powerful side, so they depowered him…I don’t know why fics do that. {It happens a lot in crossover fics. Discord is usually trounced easily…even though he’s pretty much a god on par, or at least slightly above Celestia.)
I think the biggest problem with Discord in any fanfic is the fact he’s supposed to omnipotent, and therefore totally overpowered. His only real weakness is his overconfidence, and his mischievous streak.
These traits make him very hard to write in to stories.
Plus, Discord’s biggest attraction is his amusing one-liners.
Any role players are well aware how easy it is to quote some of his lines.
(One of our local group of RPG players has tried to ban the use of lines from ‘The Princess Bride’ because it was getting quoted every five minutes… It didn’t work).
Yeah, most of them ignore Discord. I can only really think of a few that do so and even then, they don’t really do Discord any service. (Mostly making him weak compared to anything warhammer…even though Discord can bend reality with a simple thought.)
Like how some chaos marines were able to best Discord…Even though he could just turn them into trout and juggle them about and whatnot. (Felt like someone slapped me in the face.){Which also brings up the princesses aren’t that concerned about chaos forces in most fics, even though Discord gave them trouble in the past.)
There are only, to my knowledge, three fics I know of where he’s at least done somewhat right.
1: a story about a guardsman in Equestria. It’s pretty much the guardsman living out Discord’s freedom attempt in the official episode. I thought it did him well enough.
2: a fic about a bunch of chaos marines in Equestria….to my knowledge, he really isn’t in the fic, just in a passing scene with him in the warp, chatting it up with some of the other major daemons of warhammer.
3: Celestia is the god-empress. Discord fights ‘her’ and Luna and proves a challenge but is in the end defeated by the elements.
What I’d like is a real warhammer fic to acknowledge canon-Discord and let him do his thing and not depower him.
Also, there there are two fics that feature Discord against the chaos gods.
The first is about Celestia dating the God Emperor. Discord invites his college buddies and the chaos gods hate him for turning. Since he’s only as powerful as one of them, two of them double team him….Again, ugh! Discord is pretty much Malal and the other chaos gods fear the guy. I think he could take them, really.
The second is where Discord is trying to connect between Equestria and humanity which is under attack by the conversion bureau-Equestria. In it, Discord accuses Tzeentch of not being a chaos god because he’s too orderly….It should be noted the author pretty much destroyed Discord’s character beforehand, so I didn’t think he was one to judge. (The author pretty much stated in the fic that Discord wasn’t the bad guy, I mean, at all. It was Celestia who was evil and bad for stopping Discord….The fic likes to make Celestia look like an idiot over and over again. With the inclusion of Discord berating her, making her cry, and justifying himself.)
Why is it so hard to write Discord in crossovers?!!!

I keep seeing fanfics that cross over with Warhammer and totally ignore the existence of Discord. Someday I would love to see a Warhammer crossover where the Chaos Gods attempt to invade Equestria and Discord’s response is “GET THE FUCK OFF MY TERRITORY ASSHOLES” and actually backs it up. :-)
Warhammer chaos is pretty much evil and demons
MLP chaos is a natural destuction force like tornado, its more neutral
warhammer chaos != chaos (chaotic element)
they are pretty good organized
same goes for D&D chaos type, they aren’t that chaotic
But Discord is a schemer. Like with the little ‘seeds’ he planted, which took root. Of course, they didn’t go off when he wanted them too, but more often than not, things will not go ‘just as planned’ for Tzeentch. {Though, I think he likes a challenge.}
