Description
That thread is the source because people speak about why they think the conversion from SNES to GBA is bad.
Yeah, it’s basically part of the DKC series, (even if it was more like SM64 & Banjo) and was made by the same people. Said game even brought back classic DKC enemies like the Gnawty beevers, and Zinger wasps, and had nods to the series throughout it.
Does DK 64 count?
I’m pretty much a fan of the DKC and DKL series. In fact, I’ve owned all of them, even the GBC port of the original DKC.
I think that was for those who didn’t have the backlit GBA SP.
And they’ve been out in Japan for years. (Fans are really upset by the slow VC updates.) I got “Bonk’s Adventure” and it’s quite fun. Hope we get more, that console needs more love.
Yeah, and they FINALLY started releasing TurboGrafx-16 games on the Wii U VC a couple weeks ago.
Aren’t all of them on it? Still, wouldn’t mind portable pixel-perfect SNES games, but alas as you say, we old 3DS owners are hosed.
At least we get some Sega Genesis games.
Yeah, now the 3DS VC is focusing on the New 3DS-exclusive SNES games. Most of which are of course already available on the Wii U.
Not my fault, but yeah.
Kinda funny I was wrong about the Pokémon games not being VC games. Still, aside from those, and the DKL trilogy, the 3DS VC no longer seems to allow anymore new Gameboy games oddly. It’s not like they’re poor sellers, as some GB games on the Eshop have more ratings then some retail games.
Not to mention the GBA version of DKC2 had an all-new boss, but that was already discussed in this thread years ago.
(Sure never expected this thread to get necro’d)
Only thing I disliked was they took out Diddy & Dixie’s funny “character switch” animations, changed the ending, and a few other changes. It wasn’t too bad a port, just took out, or changed some of the game’s more charming features.
The GB “Donkey Kong Land 2” wasn’t bad, but people often mistake it for a remake of the SNES game (due to using the same story, characters/enemies, and some of the maps.) it’s levels are all different from the SNES one.
So it’s more like an 8-bit DKC2, with different/new levels.
It’s only 3 bucks if you get it off the 3DS Virtual Console/Eshop. It has the same physics as Balloon Fight, but puts them to good use in a side-scrolling action game environment. (Even has boss battles.) I like the gimmick of being able to let go of your balloons to, in order to fit in small hidden areas.
It’s kinda short, (like other earlier Gameboy games) but the challenge in later areas, and the great 8-bit music helps make up for that. I even managed to get a “Perfect” (by collecting all the balloons in a level) in several of the levels.
Also, it includes the original “Balloon Trip” mode.
Huh, I should consider Balloon Kid later on.
Yeah, it wasn’t released there until 3DS Virtual Console. Some other Nintendo-made games actually never got released in Japan either, like the “Star Tropics” series, (which was more-so aimed at the American audience) and the Gameboy sequel to “Balloon Fight,” “Balloon Kid” (which is pretty good BTW) until they made a Gameboy Color version for Japan, because fans there were demanding a sequel for Balloon Fight. (Also, added a save feature, and map screen to the game to modernize it.)
Donkey Kong Land 3 was also not released in Japan for years, until a Gameboy Color version of it was made for that region to. (USA & Europe only got the B&W 1997 version.)
Speaking of, Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters never was released in Japan, so any references to it were nonexistent in Uprising.
Yeah, that’s pretty much the whole story behind it. I forgot to mention “Yoshi’s Panel De Pon” was released in Japan later after the USA version.
Similarly, Dr. Mario 64 adapted “Wario Land 3” characters into it’s story mode, & VS modes for some reason.
@Jarkes
That’s what I meant, it was released in Japan, not America. But the GameCube/GBA ad booklet I had only listed the same 3 games as the Japanese version, so I don’t think they were going to add more to it.
Nintendo Puzzle Collection actually WAS released in Japan, and apparently the NA release would’ve included a lot more games than just those three. As you said, though, they sadly never released it over here…
Well, the reason they put the Yoshi’s Island characters in there is because in its original form, known as “Panel de Pon,” the characters were these cute little fairies (In fact the main character, Lip, is where the “Lip’s Stick” item from Smash Bros. comes from). They didn’t think such characters would sell well in the West, so they changed it to the Yoshi’s Island characters. However, the backgrounds and other graphics were taken from the original. And I’m guessing they went with the “Tetris” name because of name recognition or something.
I think Nintendo of America wanted to capitalize on Tetris’ popularity, so they called it “Tetris Attack” to get more players interested in it.
In Japan it was called “Panel De Pon,” or “Yoshi’s Panel De Pon” to be specific.
The original “Panel De Pon” version was almost released here in the form of “Nintendo Puzzle Collection” for GameCube, (which also included Dr. Mario 64, and Yoshi’s Cookie) I even had a store booklet of GameCube games, and it featured “Nintendo Puzzle Collection” in it as a “coming soon” game, (with “Panel De Pon” in tact) but sadly it was cancelled for some reason…
(Shame ‘cause I wanted to get it.)
In fact, similarly Kirby’s Avalanche, and Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine are an adaption of another Japan-only puzzle game. (Both were USA exclusives.)
False advertising?
I dunno. I could get into a lengthy explanation of its origins, but that wouldn’t actually answer the question.
Why did they call it “Tetris Attack” if it plays nothing like traditional Tetris, anyway?
I said first-party games, meaning ones Nintendo made themselves, or published. We have the NES version of Dr. Mario, but we don’t have “Tetris & Dr. Mario,” or “Dr. Mario 64” on Virtual Console. We have “Pokemon Puzzle League” on VC, but not “Tetris Attack.” Nor do we have “Super Mario All-stars” or other games like that.
@AP_Epikyur
Metroid Fusion is already out in most regions actually. Check your Eshop.
