It’s Catherine
Fair enough.
I understand that Samus may be traumatized by Ridley killing her parents, but this is Samus we’re talking about here. She goes into dangerous planets and kills stuff for a living and she had already fought Ridley twice, having shown no signs of PTSD before, not even the first time, which would of made sense then for her to freak out, but not the third, if anything, it would of made more sense for her to be pissed-off about the situation, kinda like: “I finally got revenge on the thing that killed my paren– Oh Goddammit, those fuckers made a clone.”
And in the whole “Following Adam to
theher death” thing… Samus was not in his squad. In fact, her not using the Gravity nor Varia suit or the grapple beam and more defensive erlated beams from the start made no sense whatsoever, why can’t I use the thing that will prevent me from dying a horrible fiery death? Becuase Adam dind’t say to. Why can’t I use the only non-lethal beam in my arsenal? Because Adam didn’t say so. Why the fuck did Samus go down in one shot from an Assault Rifle while she constantly gets pummeled, burned and shot all the time and never suffers any side effect other than the occassional death? Because the writers are damned idiots, that’s why.lso, if it was a dude in the lead role people would probably call it stupid, not sexist.
I can understand the problems with Adam’s portrayal, but come on guys. Samus was CLEARLY going through PTSD during most of that game. And given what happened at the end of Super Metroid, who can blame her? Heck, considering what she went through in her backstory (keep in mind that Ridley brutally murdered her parents in front of her when she was 3 years old), it’s also somewhat understandable that the recent emotional turmoil she went through may have brought up repressed issues with Ridley. …The PROBLEM is that the game doesn’t bother to mention the whole “Ridley killed her parents” thing, and just kind of expects the audience to know that… EXCEPT that the information was only ever revealed in the Metroid manga, which most Western gamers (read: 90% of Metroid’s audience) have not read.
Now mind you, I do think the game could have certainly handled it better (any way you slice it, the Varia Suit thing was ridiculous). But I can’t help but suspect that if it was a MALE character going through more or less the same kind of emotional turmoil, people would call it “complex” and “relatable.” But if it’s a woman? “OMG SEXIST!!!!!!1111!!!” …Though I say again, despite Team Ninja trying to pass the blame to Sakamoto (and he certainly was behind some of it, particularly the bits about obeying orders, which is kind of a big deal in Japan; to the Japanese, a soldier MUST follow the orders of his or her superior without question), considering that Team Ninja made games like Dead or Alive, I can’t help but think that it ended up feeling more sexist because of their input. If it had been another developer working with more or less the same story, it might’ve been handled better.
What the heck?! What video game is that?
And yeah, Other M is a massive trainwreck of bad writing. This is completely relevant to your interests.
Oh, this is a reference to Other M? I purposely stayed the hell away from it, so I don’t actually know any of the lines and only bare bones of the story. That explains it. Which reminds me…
Retro Studios! Where’s the next Metroid Prime, dammit!?
God, the Varia suit unlock was retarded…
To be more specific, the gameplay was meh and the story was godawful, taking one of the only female video game characters and going from a strong badass fearless bountyhunter to a cringing slave to her emotions obsessed with obeying her man even at the risk of her own life.
Basically, the new Metroid sucks.
I remember when Adam….
