I like to think of the face paint as not just a callback to 80s-era glam rock, but also to Jem. Hasbro does own Jem, so for all we know some aspects of this movie could be recycling a scrapped Jem revival.

I believe face-paint was a major part of the Eighties Rock scene, more specifically the Glam Rock era that David Bowie and Twisted Sister (among others) help popularize.
