Here’s an article that analyzes it quite in-depth and here’s one that equates her relationship with Angel Bunny to that of an abusive relationship. If this isn’t the case, there seems to be plenty of people who think it is.
Although, it is worth pointing out that not all people who act like this were abused, and not all people who were abused act like this.
I also thought about this back when watching Power Ponies. She also seems to have a very instinct-like desire to protect the weak and defenseless, and will “hulk out” against anyone who bullies the tiny bugs or animals around (those who usually can’t defend for themselves), ponies also fall in this category if she feels they are really endangered.
And it made me think that might also be a product of the childhood she had.
The writers keep turning Fluttershy into a monster because in her heart, she IS one. Or at least, she thinks she’s one.
The writers are very careful not to dwell on it much, but it’s pretty clear that Fluttershy is a victim of childhood abuse. They’ve mentioned her being bullied at school, but it could be a lot more than that. Like a lot of abuse victims, she has a barely suppressed rage inside her, and every now and then it slips out. She’s horrified by the anger she’s capable of feeling, and tries hard to repress it. Thus her shyness–she’s scared to let her feelings out, lest she accidentally hurt someone.
Love this pic. Just a matter of time before all Fluttershy freaks outs are Vamped Out, until we’ve got the true conclusion: all her bits as Flutterbitch in “Return of Harmony” vamped out.

Not really. She’s more of a were-bat than an actual vampire.

A whole lot.
