Well, that and The Simpsons (due to massive production crew), but they rarely go after a timely thing, it’s more usual they do 80’s/90’s actor allusions/spoofs. Nostalgiabombing. Occasional timely examples are usually involving bands the show’s directors like, such as the White Stripes episode where Bart becomes a drummer.
I should add that being dated or incredibly representative of its time period isn’t a bad thing. It’s a good way to find out what fashions people wore and stuff like that. For as much as people complained about boots in Equestria Girls, that is/was what is/was in style when the film was made.
So yeah. It doesn’t mean it can’t be entertaining, but it becomes entertaining in a completely unintentional way that sometimes distracts from the story.
It’s portraying the idea that memes should stay on the real life internet and should have no interaction in today’s media. However, going by how rapidly technology is advancing, that is pretty much impossible now.

The best humor is usually timeless. FiM (the main show) won’t seem nearly as dated five, ten, or twenty years from now as LPS. It’s what happens when you have a modern setting. Doesn’t necessarily mean its bad, just harder to get into for younger audiences.
Have a song.
Internet humor removed from the context of the Internet becomes terribly unfunny.
Besides, this is just a 2010’s upgrade of a “photo of main character doing something amazing gets in newspaper” plot.
