The old ones are tame by today’s standards, but the enemies get freakier looking, and there’s more blood/gore in the later games. (Even the GBA & DS 2D ones.)
That “Beezlebub” (Meaning “Lord of the flies”) boss was pretty darn gross. Sometimes “grotesque,” can be “scary” for some people. That’s why alot of scary movies are so gory.
eh, hardly. I haven’t played the handhelds, but in my experience they’re pretty tame. The times when it tries to go grimdork it fails very hard(such as making Leon kill his girlfriend.)
Normally it’s more like those campy b-movies with the underlying ‘man is the real monster’ theme. (if not by beating the tar out of them all on his own, then by being the motivation for Drac going evil, such as in SotN). Legion and Beezlebub and the like would rate it more ‘grotesque’ overall though.
(Love those games, even if they are quite hard sometimes.)
I don’t think this needs a “grimdark” tag. Sure Castlevania games are dark, but this is pretty tame, and just a character in a costume.
