We haven’t actually heard him sing, though. The closest we’ve ever got was, as you said, issue 11 of the comic.
The comics didn’t give Cadance that backstory though. That was actually a children’s book titled “Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell.”

Some people consider the consider the comics canon, others don’t. There’s still a lot of debate going on.

Actually, they are canon. the comics are made by people who work for the same company and work with the writers to ensure that canon is properly set. these are the same comics that gave cadence the backstory of originally being a pegasus, and the same people who wrote a backstory to equestria girls. these comics are not fan made, neither are they made by other companies/parties.

Actually, as bad as Shining Armor’s singing was, if you read the official micro series comic, it was, indeed what caused Vinyl to get her cutie mark at her young age, way back when Shining Armor was trying to get Cadence’s attention back while the two were in high school. If you want proof without reading the comic, Go to the youtube channel EverFreeRadio, find the video titled “MLP Comic Issue #11 Review,” and go to the 5:21 moment in the video, start watching for about ten seconds.
