To me, Celestia is the mother of the land and everypony is her spiritual child, this way every wannabe conqueror has to face the wrath of a mother protecting her children, the most fearsome power in all of equestria.

It would be really cruel if Celestia actually married long ago and had a normal, non-immortal child. She had to watch her husband and her child die as they grew old while she remained young. After that, she decided to never marry again.
