I agree. There’s now some male blue pegasus in G4 named North Star that’s not related to G1 North Star, IMO the latter is better.
It means the old G1 seapony character too.
There are many names that are cross generation.
I wouldn’t know; I don’t spend a lot of time in ocean caves.

Them, yeah. A bunch of fishmen could stand in a lineup with other Dream Valley denizens and they wouldn’t look out of place.
The only thing I can think of is the creatures from Lovecraftian lore. The fish dudes that made a deal with the people in Innsmouth.

Making and controlling bubbles actually seems to be a sea pony power, and the unicorn, Fizzy, has bubbles as her magic trick.
If any group of characters could do it, it’s them.
My guess is that they fell in battle against the Deep Ones. No explanation was ever given, but we do know that the bodies of water within and around Dream Valley have plenty of dangers.
