people say that because it’s true
MMDW is vastly better than MMMystery on the Friendship Express.
. . . in my opinion.
Only some people make that claim. By that logic, you could claim every episode is overrated, because almost every episode has someone claiming it’s the best, and the ones that don’t are the episodes like MMDW, where some would say that calling it decent would be overrating it.
Who claims that? If anything, people seem to have some odd animosity towards it. If anything people will say Secret of My Excess is the best Spike episode.
People still claim that it is the best Spike episode, and even the only good Spike episode. Sounds like overrated to me.
>Overrated
Don’t use words if you don’t know what they actually mean.
And in light of the two comments preceding mine, I suppose it would be good to add that I see where you’re coming from, even if I largely disagree. Some have criticized “The Return of Harmony” for a similar reason, having most of the main cast acting OOC for most of the storyline.
Trust me, I don’t believe /mlp/ uncritically. I just wanted to point out that Merriwether Williams, while new to the show, was still working on this episode with Lauren Faust, Rob Renzetti, James Wootton, Jayson Thiessen, and other crew members who’d been with the show from day one. So it’s not just a case of an inexperienced writer getting the characters wrong for an episode, but also of the rest of the staff going along with it.
And I respectfully disagree with you on MMMystery, but also understand why you don’t like it.
See this, rest of the internet? This is how you’re supposed to go about things when people disagree.
I get what you’re saying. I still don’t agree regarding Hearth’s Warming Eve, but I understand why you feel that way.
And? Despite what /mlp/ wants you to believe, Faust is not a Perfect Goddess who is always right and did 100% of the work of the show until she left. She has had some good ideas and bad ones. IMO, the very first episode was the weakest in Season one, and it was written by Faust. I do give her major props for starting the show and from what I can tell, being a nice person.
@Ninoyiya
She had eyelashes before she put the fakes on in BNE, probably extensions or something like that.
You do know that “Hearth’s Warming Eve” was one of the season 2 episodes that Lauren Faust worked more closely on, right? (Check close to the end of the image at >>335352 for proof.)
Didn’t Rarity have false eyelashes back in ‘Best Night Ever’?
It’s weird to explain why I don’t like it, because “well it’s a play, of course they’re OOC.”
Suppose there was a TV show with a black person. In most episodes, this is a multidimensional character who has had a lot of development and a very established personality. Then in a writer who doesn’t write for the show often makes an episode where that hypothetical black person is cast in a play/movie/whatever where the “character” he’s “acting” as is uneducated, speaks in ebonics, and embodies various stereotypes. Now suppose that character’s defining trait that was flanderized into his entire personality wasn’t “the black guy,” but “the shy one” or “the smart one” or Fluttershy or Twilight Sparkle.
Also, Big Mac having trouble lifting something is a gag as old as Dragonshy, with AJ’s saddlebags.
I also consider MMMystery non-canon, but mostly because Rarity having false eyelashes goes against Sweet and Elite’s moral.
Except that wasn’t meant to be the Mane Six; it was meant to be Princess Platinum, Clover the Clever, etc. Yes, Rarity acted like a bitch; because Platinum was in the wrong and was portrayed as such. You might just as easily complain that, since Tara Strong isn’t really an adorkable bookworm, her voicing Twilight Sparkle is bad and wrong.
The song was generic; I can’t argue that.
MMMystery on the Friendship Express had some funny moments, - namely, Pinkie’s fantasy sequences - but overall it was just plain bad. It wasn’t just the ponies acting OOC; stupid things like Big “Housemover” Mac struggling under the weight of a damn cake made it hard for me to enjoy it.
I don’t mind Hearths Warming Eve so much because, as you say, it was a play. It had its flaws, but at least I can dismiss most of them as bad acting.
Hearth’s Warming took every character and made them one dimensional. Twilight and Applejack aren’t just smart, they’re the ONLY smart ones, and that’s all they are. Rarity was a bitch (and I never say that about Best Pony) who couldn’t handle a puddle despite every other episode showing she can. Pinkie Pie was funny, but also dumb and selfish, the very opposite of herself, Rainbow Dash was a bossy narcissist (basically RD from Mare Do Well), and Fluttershy had no character at all. Also, FS, AJ and TS were always right, and PP, RA, and RD were always wrong.
If the excuse of “it’s a play” held up, then they would be acting as characters other than themselves-written-badly. As an added “bonus” the song was generic.
Mystery on the Friendship Express Toy Set at your local Toys R Us had the fact that it was funny. One of the funniest episodes IMO. But they did write themselves into a corner by making the mane 6 suspects. SOMEpony had to betray Pinkie, and with the mane 6 being PFFs no matter who it was it would be out-of-character. Unless it was say, Spike, but let’s not get talking about Spike episodes.
Oops, yeah, I thought from these comments on DB. I have no idea on the one mentioned in the Twitter (it doesn’t appear here on DB under the corey powell tag)
I’m pretty sure that isn’t the referenced image. She isn’t being killed by spike in that one.
This one (tagged explicit, you are warned) >>242785
No, ‘cause I actually liked Hearth’s Warming Eve. Worldbuilding? Scary monsters? Burning scary monsters to death with the Fires of Friendship? Yes please.
Worst episode was the one where Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy and Rarity completely and totally betrayed both their elements and their friend Pinkie. Yeah.
Think about that for a moment: Rarity, the Element of Generosity, stealing the cake Pinkie was guarding. Fluttershy, the Element of Kindness, actively deceiving Pinkie. Rainbow Dash, the Element of Loyalty, betraying Pinkie by actively destroying the cake that Pinkie was guarding, then lying about it and letting Pinkie go half-nuts from worry and guilt despite knowing exactly how seriously Pinkie took that because Pinkie freaking told her.
MotFE is the only episode I refuse to accept as canon.
