No, Button Mash is not canon.

Why? because that is not the name of this pony.

That pony is never named, so “Button Mash’ itself isn’t canon and guess what, never will be, because I doubt they will use that sprite again.

In other news, anyone with a computer can become their own publisher on the internet. It’s known as blogging, and it’s simple to use and you can do it for free.

Perhaps the names are official via toys. Nothing more.
You can’t deny the fact that the character we’re calling Button Mash does in fact exist. He might not have that name in Studio B, but he does exist because he appears in the show.

Yes, the fandom. Not the canon.

If we’re NOT using merchandise as canon, then Lyra and Vinyl Scratch aren’t canon either, since characters with those names don’t appear in the T.V. show.

…which I guess means I completely agree with your “Button Mash is no more canon than Lyra and Vinyl Scratch” statement, since none of those are canon at all (if we only look at the show).

I expected this response. Is Pepperdance suddenly canon because she has a toy? How about Cherry Blossom?
Both Lyra and Vinyl were part of the fandom long before there were toys based upon them.

Lyra has toys with her name on it, at least. Vinyl Scratch is called “DJ Pon-3” in most of the merchandise, though “Vinyl Scratch” shows up sometimes.

“Button Mash” doesn’t even have that.

Just because you took a background character and gave them a personality, doesn’t mean everything done is worthy of canon, it’s basically a half-OC.
