MLP Special #1, re-released as
My Little Pony n Friends: S1 E49 Escape from Midnight Castle (part 1)
In which Tirek unleashes the Rainbow of Darkness, to perform a horrific ritualistic transformation upon the innocent ponies, so that they may pull the reigns of his Chariot of Midnight, to bring forth the Night That Never Ends.
Tirek: “But you three will do, for now. Behold the power of DARKNESS!”
that’s what I said
Really? Some earlier episodes did, like one episode where there friendly human ghost. (Whom didn’t know he was a ghost)
But yeah, another odd thing is when a show clearly show a villain dying, or something, but they don’t use words like “kill,” or “death,” but just say something like “defeated.”
that’s weirdness has been going on for years going back to the Ghostbusters despite already showing it latest seasons of The Real Ghostbusters were not allowed to have ghosts that are actually ghosts(dead people)

It’s weird what’s allowed or not allowed in kid’s shows anymore.
Heck, I think one of the reasons they don’t air the Canadian show “The Raccoons” in the US anymore, is because a character in it smokes a cigar. (And he’s a bit fugly, so I don’t think kids would wanna imitate him, if that’s what they’re worried about.)
Bullet guns are also not allowed in kid shows anymore, but laser guns are fine.
I guess a laser burning through your flesh is somehow less violent then a bullet.
that thing that really bothers me when people talk about how much darker children shows used to be they tend to act like stupid censorship is a more recent thing when it’s pretty much goes back to the beginning of television. At one point pointy glasses were considered too scary for children and they were forced to change them with round one(the real ghostbusters Janine)
Many forget that “The Flintstones” was actually a grown-up show originally, (has some jokes and issues most kids wouldn’t understand, and even advertised cigarettes) but because it’s so old, and “clean” compared to newer stuff, many brush it off as a “kid show.” Didn’t help it’s later TV specials, and remakes like the “Flinstones Kids,” and such were more aimed at children, and Fred & Barney are cereal mascots too.
Even stuff like Loony Tunes were kinda adult at times, so it’s really nothing new.

To be honest part of me thinks this mindset of old kid shows were much more darker and adult cartoons need to be edgier could be because of Hanna barbera and cn/boomerang. despite not actually being meant for kids reruns of Tom and Jerry and The Flintstones were played no different to the children shows

No
“Kn?”
And let’s not forget what happened to “Ren & Stimpy” when that “child show” filter was removed, and it became “Adult Party Cartoon.” (It made South Park look like Disneyland.) Sometimes having a li’l restraint is better then a show going completely nuts.
Edgyness has to have some balance.
Kinda like how family guy was better when the network would actually tell Seth MacFarlane kn
Yeah, too many “adult shows,” kinda focus on the edge/content factor too much, or fart jokes.
I remember “Space Ghost Coast to Coast” was actually better before it started cussing, and having things like Zorak pissing on Space Ghost’s head. Cringe comedy doesn’t always work if forced.

a bit off topic but it is quite funny how kid shows are often more mature than stuff made for adults
You mean, “us,” not “you,” right?
But yeah, I remember some “Think of the children” fans accusing the brony fandom for making the show become “too dark/edgy” for kids, even though there is much worse out there aimed at kids. Not to mention, they forget Season 1 had it’d edgy moments. (Like Twilight in a wheelchair, having an anvil drop on her head, or Fluttershy being puked on by a bird.)
It’s especially sexist how they assume li’l girls can’t handle the show’s content, >>634672 Which is very ignorant, because as a kid I knew girls who liked scary movies, and vulgar stuff like “Ren & Stimpy,” or “Beavis & Butthead.” Heck, one of my nieces loves zombie movies, and Jurassic Park. (A movie featuring a severed arm, and such.)
MLP may have it’s edgy moments, but it still maintains an innocence about it, and it’s nowhere near SpongeBob or “Rick & Morty” levels of edgyness, or inappropriateness. In fact, there’s plenty of girls like those shows too.
I definitely remember seeing people say that when you stole the show and it’s no longer appropriate for children even though the age-rating did not change and an age rating is not a guideline
Yeah, I know what you mean. I’ve seen some complain that the show or comics are too “dark.” (On Twitter comic artist Andy Price responded to this by listing off many famous movies, and shows kids like, that have dark/edgy moments. Like that crazy chef whom wanted to cook Kermit the frog for example.)
Oddly, there’s some “genwunner” MLP fans who think the current show is too dark/edgy, forgetting about G1 dark moments/villains like the original Tirek above. (Ironically, the new Tirek is a bit lighter.) This site actually has some surprisingly edgy G1 moments captured in animated GIF form.
There’s oddly people who want the show to be like Teletubbies, or an Adult Swim show.
Why can’t it just be a family show like it always was?
the annoying part is you do get people who overreact to anything remotely dark in cartoons. And I don’t just mean overprotective parents people on this site do it
Yeah, there’s still some pretty dark shows out there, like Gravity Falls, that are pretty good. I wasn’t saying there wasn’t.

I’m not too sure how it is right now but I know at least pre sponge out of water SpongeBob was suffering the same problem that was killing family guy just being edgy for the sake of it.
And well I do understand what people mean when they say kids shows aren’t as dark as they used to be kid shows still have dark moments in them
I remember in DuckTales 2017 the mummy told Louie to die cilp

Yeah, SpongeBob, and such have their occasional edgy/creepy moments, but just not quite the same.
To me that’s the reason to appreciate those old bits of entertainment. These days it is rather hard to find anything grotesque in cartoons directed to a much younger audience, elsagate aside.
Not that I’m encouraging horror in kids shows. It’s just exotic to me.
