At the latest point in the story, all attempts at making him go super mode (he’s some sort of ancient, super powerful, politically significant living McGuffin) have failed due to her presence. So by taking her away, he might be able to finally unleash the beast within. That idea was his own by the way.
There’s reasons, and emotions and story, but that’s the barest of bones. We’re almost at the marrow, here, is what I’m saying.
Tremors? Like PD or Graboids?
(Although I love the idea of dragon-on-dragon mortal combat. The victor gets the loser’s hoard. Spike must defend his love by using his own set of unique skills to slay the opposing dragon [as Rarity is ‘obviously’ part of the hoard]).
Or he got cabin fever and decided it wasn’t worth bringing with him. Or he went on a hunt and got killed by another dragon, or worse.
Or it could have been Tremors.
Abandoned? If there was something so horrible inside the cave that a dragon had to abandon his hoard entirely just to flee to safety I think they’re both seriously bucked.

againand was held captive for much longer by captors unaffected by her whining. Spike busted her out, but they got lost in the catacombs… fortunately, they discovered a dragon’s abandoned hoard, so it was worth it.its cute but wha?
