I’d figure that the “historic” Hearth’s Warming event would have resembled something like this:
 

 
At the left are nomadic Scythian warriors (Pegasi) while at the right is a Babylonian king (Unicorn). Earth ponies would have been indigenous farmers unwilling to be ruled by either of them.
 
While the ancient Near East lacked ice storms, it certainly suffered from droughts and harsh desert winds. And like Saturnalia, the “Hearth’s Warming Eve” would have some elements tweaked to suit Western tastes.
 
Finally, there was one historical parallel to the newly founded Equestria:

Generalissimo Hurricane has quite a ring to it.

I always figured “Commander” Hurricane’s actual title was something was something vaguely Fascist, but was changed for being too far/too difficult to understand, for the children in universe and out.

I could buy Commander Hurricane and Pansy actually being male, given that the current pony military is all male, but why Chancellor Puddinghead and Smart Cookie?

I was always under the impression that they were a very stratified caste system of some sort rather than different countries.
 
That would explain why the leader of the earth ponies was only a chancellor. A chancellor is usually only a minister rather than the head of state, so an earth pony advisor elected to work with the unicorn royals makes a certain amount of sense.

….so? I still like to imagine that what was actually going on was more like a civil war…
