TSP, I don’t know if this is sufficient response for you but if you want more, may I suggest a banner announcing either the forum post or this image for a few days?
The problem with that is a lot of people only have one or two tags in their watchlist, like an artist or a specific ship. Meaning they’d only get a new image displayed there once a day, if that.
I have no problem with that. At least I’d notice when there’s a change.
There’d be plenty of image changes on the rest of the page to compensate. :-)

I would suggest putting forum activity above the top scoring stuff (if that even needs to be on the main page aside from maybe the weekly top scoring)
EG, something like:
Featured image
Weekly top scoring
Forum activity
Recent comments
Livestreams
The forums need more attention if we want to get rid of the random 8-page comment roleplaying threads, meme images that would be better as forum threads, etc.
I like it, but it does get in my way, let me explain.
I use a wide screen TV with W7s half screen windows setup, IE I have one window on each half of my screen, so each window is actually very narrow.
Given that the browser window is so narrow these extra things down the side limit me to ONE COLUM of images on the first page…
However, I have been using more of the site given the recent change, particularly the forums. So I’m not going to ask for its removal, It’s certainly a good thing to have.
Just keep it to one page :P
I like it on the whole; however, I don’t see the point in putting “All Time Top Scoring” in the sidebar as it’s going to change very rarely. By the same token, I’d be tempted to change “Weekly Top Scoring/Commented” to a shorter time period, say 3 days.
Part of me would also like to move “Forum Activity” to just below “Featured Image”, and put the “Top Scoring/Commented” section at the bottom of the sidebar, but I know that would break up the current arrangement of having content grouped with similar content, so I don’t know if it’d be worth it.
I agree with the people who’ve said the sidebar needs some visual distinction (though I prefer the colourisation option - grey and lighter grey backgrounds as opposed to the white on the other side?).
As for the option to not use it, why not a setting to select this “portal” or images/forums/streams/etc. as a user’s homepage?

I would put the watched images up top, though. Same size area for them and everything, just above the regular images.

because when you go over to the second page
it be a more “smooth” transition then.
If the sidebar is on the left and disappears
after clicking on page 2 the whole site moves
rigged.
