I’m gonna let you in on a little secret: I think real-life horses are ugly. I think that’s why I love G4’s and G5’s art styles so much: they took some good features from horses, and just made everything much cuter (so that the ponies only vaguely resemble real-life horses)

Perhaps “ugliest” wasn’t the right term, because I don’t think it’s (super) ugly - just the least appealing/cute.

Yeah, I really liked how none of the G5 Mane Six were carbon copies of previous gens (especially G4) - there were traits in common, but none were one-to-one character matches.

I would say a mix between G1 and G3.

I like when Generations take little bits of characters from previous Gens for their casts, and I think many people’s unfamiliarity with this trend throughout the series is one of many reasons those “Zipp is just Rainbow Dash 2!” complaints were so ignorant. That said, I don’t know if I really agree with the notion that a problem with G5 was not enough taking design inspiration from previous ponies; Particularly given how tied G5 is to G4, I think at least going unique for the cast was a sign of goodwill, particularly since G4 itself already took so much from previous Generations. I mean what were we gonna do, name the baby dragon character “Spike” again while the G4 Spike is literally still alive? If G5 and G4 were going to be connected (and let’s not kid ourselves, that was always going to be the case) G4 already borrowed so many things from G1 and G3 that anything G5 tried to use would only make the constant comparisons worse.

I do agree at least that G6 should try for a “back to basics” approach, leaving the G4/G5 well alone for a bit and playing with some of the concepts that haven’t been mined to death over the last 15 years.

It’d be more accurate to say it’s a “reboot” of G1 but if everyone had G3 names, but even that’s kind of selling G4’s unique qualities short.

I wouldn’t call either G3 or G3.5 ugly; the only exception I’d call ugly is Newborn Cuties, but only because it felt like a weird hybrid of the two art styles.

But G3 had the ugliest art style of all the various MLP gens, though (IMO)
