They call it Common Core now. It’s the new New Math.
Most formula parsers can correctly interpret that. Parentheses, in this case, are just for readability.
@Zeryurijin
Or 8 + 5, or 100 - 87, or 2^4 - 3. The equal sign (“=”) expresses equality (duh!), not “execute all the operations and write down the atomic answer”, even though it’s commonly interpreted like that.

It is a safe method to write everything correctly. Imagine if you are somehow tired and you cant read your calculations right? The parenthesis fixes and prevents such errors.
I rarely used parenthesis when dealt with equations using negatives because I make sure the negative sign is clearly different from the subtraction sign
Correct answer is 13.
Today’s just a mathematical day.
Yeah, I suppose that is more correct given that both square roots and powers are considered after exponents.
Wait, I hate math. How did I get looped into this crap?!
It’s because it’s not completely solved. It was most likely a kid trying to be a smartass. We can’t argue with the results.
I think you mean BODMAS.
() around the -1.
Because i am a math nazi.
A better answer would be 13.
