Description
You might know that the sun is about 109 times the diameter of the earth (109.3). But did you know that the distance to the sun versus its diameter is nearly the same ratio (107.7)? (The average, then, is 108.5.) It’s almost like a fundamental constant of the solar system!
Ever since Spike and Gabby discovered the human world, they discovered special powers that they can use in that universe. One day, Spike was thinking about his desire to be a big strong dragon. Suddenly, he discovered that he had become much bigger. He was now a great big monster, about 300 feet tall! Although a gentle and kind dragon, Spike couldn’t help but laugh at the people running scared.
Spike didn’t want to stop at 300 feet. He wanted to think as big – and grow as big – as possible! Gabby saw Spike having big fun, and she hoped she could join, too. With the magic of their love, Gabby could share Spike’s new size-changing properties. Pretty soon, they were having a fun growth contest!
The world’s militaries tried to fight the two giants. They tried bullets and conventional bombs. But Spike and Gabby kept growing and growing, and they felt no pain at all. Although Spike and Gabby care very much about helpless creatures, they couldn’t help but giggle at how defenseless these proud humans were.
Pretty soon, Gabby and Spike were so big, mountains could fit between their toes. To show off their powers, they crushed whole cities with just their toes! Caught up in the moment, Spike started teasing the scared humans: “Oops! There goes one city. And another! And another! All your great civilizations are just dust between my toes!”
Even nuclear bombs were no good. Humankind’s greatest weapons could only tickle these two massive giants! Was this how the world was meant to end … as a stomping ground for two giants to have a few minutes of fun?
Thinking as big as she could, Gabby felt the greatest burst of power yet. Suddenly, she found herself floating. She saw stars above … and stars below. Gabby was floating in space. And she felt something between her toes. Gabby looked down toward her foot. Could it be …?
Yes it was! She was so massive – the world was like a little pebble between her toes. Now Gabby wondered how big the humans’ sun was. She flew over to check it out. When she arrived, she was surprised again. From head to hind feet, she was as tall as the diameter of the sun! She was about 109 times the diameter of the earth!
As Gabby relaxed on the sun, she gently squeezed the tiny planet between her toes. She looked down, feeling very proud to have the tiny helpless planet at the mercy of her toes.
“Hey, Spikey!” called Gabby, looking down toward the earth. “Say hello to your new gryphon overlord!”
“Hello, Gabby!” said a great big booming voice. “I will always be your faithful subject. Just don’t forget … I’m the power behind your throne!”
Gabby looked behind her. For a moment, she gasped with fright. Was that really …?
It was! Spike was so incredibly massive … even the great big sun was a little pebble between his toes! He was as big compared with Gabby as she was compared with Earth! He was so massive – his height equaled the distance from the earth to the sun – one astronomical unit! To him, the earth barely qualified as a speck of dust.
Spike was lying on his back, using his arms as a headrest. He looked so cool and casual. With a proud but friendly smile, he stared down with loving eyes toward his tiny gryphon queen. His smile was so open and wide, one could see his throat.
The sun’s diameter versus the earth’s … and Earth’s distance from the sun versus the sun’s diameter … the ratios were nearly equal (109.3 and 107.7, respectively)! It was like a fundamental constant of the solar system!
Gabby looked back up, feeling safe and warm between her husband’s awesomely huge toes. Gabby wanted to be a sweet and caring gryphon overlord, wanting to show the tiny earth the same love that her enormous husband shows to her! She and Spike would use their friendship magic to undo the damage they caused.
As Gabby relaxed, basking in the warmth of Spike’s presence, she dipped her feet into the sun. The inside of the sun felt like a warm hot bath. No liquid could possibly exist at such extreme temperatures, regardless of pressure. Even so, it felt dense and thick like water. There was just one problem … as she dipped her toes, she plunged the earth deep into the sun!
Gabby felt the sensation of melted rock between her toes. A short while later, she would be horrified by what just happened. Even so, everything would be restored. At first glance, it seemed that Gabby had vaporized eight billion lives. Fortunately, in this universe, her and Spike’s friendship magic comes with an immortality shield, to let them restore everything to an earlier save state.
