I think the guards are used for ceremonial purposes, rather than actual defense. As you said, the Princesses are more than capable of defending themselves from most threats, meaning a true militarized guard isn’t really needed. I think these guardsmares serve to be more like royal servants, doing various tasks for the princesses, rather than true military guards.

This is true. Also clearly this skirt wasn’t fit right to be able to protect her plot. No guard ponies. Ponies are soft and cute so clearly can’t defend anything so for their safety remove the Pony Guards, the Alicorns can handle it themselves anyways.
