Holy balls, after 2 years this thread is still active and the G5 bashing is still going. Guess the hatred toward G5 is really that deep.

Good thing I gave up on ponies already and I don’t care anymore. Those words would have hurt then, but not anymore.

That’s not entirely true. G4 did get me into ponies and G5 gave me a better journey. Besides, I dropped out after season 8.

The G4->G5 changes are pretty mild an inconsequential compared to other franchises. Not worth getting worked up about.

Again, G4 was already having trouble keeping track of the rules it put in place in the last three seasons, hence why it needed to end when it did.

G5 using G4’s lore to be the BACKBONE of it’s world was a HORRIBLE idea because it means they MUST follow G4’s universal ruleset, restricting storytelling and instantly jading G4 fans when a writer, who NEVER saw any of G4, has to write a G5 character arc or even a single episode within the extremely complicated ruleset of G4’s world.

G5 NEEDED to be a universe reset or even a parallel universe for the fans to not be upset. Yes, you can still have the 6 ponies we love show up in the background as easter eggs and show how they aren’t the main characters this time around, you can still make nods and winks to G4, but this time you’re not under the microscope of the G4 fans who will call you out on your writing going heavily against G4’s specifically sculpted timeline.

I know I said this already about this issue, but if we could tell the wicked unicorn happens to be Opaline who turn alicorn years later in the future who brought all of Equestria in ruins, the reason Twilight hid all the magic away in those crystals to ensure the safety and doesn’t fall into Opaline’s hoofs, due to her tyrannical dangerous actions towards all other ponies, including other creatures such as griffins, dragons, changelings, yaks, hippogriffs, kirins and abyssinians. She’s a danger to everyone around them by spreading lies, hatred, violence, revelation, genocide and nihilism. Without magic equals global extinction, equals the end of all life we know it.

SOME G4 fans will watch G5 and enjoy it at a surface level, but those same people don’t really know or care about continuity errors in G4, so I wasn’t really meaning them. They enjoy G5, more power to ya.

No what I’m talking about are any of the people who loved G4 for the depths of character development, the intricacies of different relationships, and the potential of tomorrow being simply slice of life with just a dash of magic and the unexpected to take place and how things would evolve over time.

G5 is trying to do that, but it’s muddied by trying to build super important story beats from the lore of G4, but the people trying to handle said lore don’t understand it and made grave mistakes, forgetting extremely important facts, and introducing new facts that don’t mesh with the old facts.

G5’s largest failing is using G4 as it’s backstory, a move it never should have done. It should have been a true clean slate.

The root is that no world building was done. See, G4 had an issue, which was that the longer the series ran, the more writers would leave, thus more new writers would be brought in and VERY FEW of these writers got these two super important memos:
1: The show has a hard continuity, there is no reset button at the end of the episode.
2: WATCH and digest all the events that have happened through the series up to this point.

By the time season 7, 8, and 9 came around, we had writers like Josh Haber completely recontextualize the entire life dynamics of entire species and cultures just for a one off episode that is never mentioned again and goes against established canon, so it was wise to close said series before the show was completely overtaken by new writers who didn’t know anything about the show.

When G5 was going being developed, the death knell was that it was going to be in the same world as G4, which was 9 years of totally complicated lore and events that the fans kept track of, but we knew the writers would not. This stuck true as even NOW they are trying to show characters having ties to G4, except it makes NO SENSE and violates so many established world rules of G4 as a whole and results in G4 fans having no reason to like G5 in the slightest because even at it’s core, it’s flawed.

-The movie gave us a ton of questions and no answers.

-The bean-faced show was a ton of unfunny fart gags that no one cares about and explained even less

-The CGI show finally tried to explain some things and it did it in such a hopelessly awful way that now there are even MORE questions without answers, making an entire voodoo-shark situation out of G5.

Unfortunately the problem goes much deeper than that, here are the writers of the show and the comics who don’t know what they’re doing and who don’t know enough about the characters and the lore as they should…
Hasbro’s big problem is that it hasn’t been able to find the right people for that and hasn’t bothered in the least to check that everything is proceeding in a right way.

You can have good villains and good worldbuilding, but Hasbro always messes that up.

At this point MLP has something that only a few other franchises have: Basically three parallel canons that handle the same overarching characters, narratives and themes, but get creative in the ways that they happen. I’m not going to get hung up too much on which one is canon, because they all are within their own universes; and none of them are when compared to the others, although the two shows are much closer to each other.

Its comics athat can’t handle characters and lore. Make your Mark and Tell Your Tale doing a better job and i already like throw away characters getting shipped like Haven and Alphabittle than Cadence and Shining. Or Villains staying villains and accomplishing their goals like Opaline than Sombra or Glimmer that get destroyed or reform after first encounter with the good guys.

That’s basically all of G5 in a nutshell.

Stand on G4’s shoulders and ignore what made it great. Namely that G4 just started as fun slice of life and you got to know and learn who the characters were, then they could throw in some trouble now and then.

But G5 couldn’t handle that.
