Have you guys ever heard of the S.S America? If not, don’t worry. To summarize, it was a cruise ship from long ago that had a rather long history. It went under many names, was owned by multiple companies, and was even used (To my knowledge) in one of the world wars to carry soldiers overseas to combat. However, it eventually fell into decay. A buyer/admirer of the ship did purchase it with plans to turn it into a hotel to preserve it’s legacy. But tragically, en route to the port, an accident forced the crew who were towing the ship to cut their cables, allowing it to drift endlessly on the open ocean. It eventually washed ashore on an island before slowly decaying away into nothing. The idea of a huge empty ship being set adrift with nary a soul inhabiting it is terrifying as it is tragic. Now why do I bring up the story of this great vessel? Well it inspired this theory/speculation that I have about Cloudsdale as well as the drawing itself.
Since magic had disappeared from Equestria, the pegasi who were inhabiting the city were forced to leave as they could no longer fly or walk on clouds. Because of this, Cloudsdale was set adrift in the sky. And with none of it’s inhabitants to maintain it, it slowly fell into decay, eventually becoming lost with time. Today in the modern days of Equestria, the city has become nothing more than a thing of legend. That is until a certain pair of pegasus sisters just so happen to discover it while trying to escape the tempest of a deadly thunderstorm.

There is now a possibility that Cloudsdale will appear in G5, perhaps for the first time in centuries. The new IDW arc comic about Zipp will be about a mysterious cloud the size of Zephyr Heights - a very large city - that had been drawn to Zephyr Heights by uncontrolled weather, endangering the pegasi.
We can only hope that Zipp will save the ruins and the pegasi will integrate the remains with Zephyr Heights, so that Cloudsdale will survive as part of the great city among the clouds. When the movie was in production, before the idea of letting the magic disappear, Zephyr Heights was supposed to be part mountain top, part cloud. Now this can be realized in IDW comics (it is questionable whether TYT will continue with this).

I doubt that. I think it faded out myself. Not an instantaneous disappearance. Twi reasons for that: 1) having such a calamity would be uncharacteristicly violent of Hasbro, who wants MLP to be kid friendly. 2) we have seen instances where magic disappeared before (best example being when Tirek stole it) and it wasn’t instantaneous.
I think that all the Pegasi survived, and went into hiding when they realized they couldn’t fly anymorw. That makes the most logical sense given the nature of Equestria.
The latest TYT episode has revealed that the magic that sustains Cloudsdale had not disappeared along with the ponies’ magic because it has been discovered that the pegasi’s weather control has been automated with the use of magical clouds. Then it is possible that Cloudsdale may have been abandoned by the pegasi who sensed that the magic in the clouds would not long respond with them, so that they could save themselves in time. Then it could mean that Cloudsdale could be intact in G5 as a legendary ghost place that no one has since discovered, and the pegasi who could fly again had not found magic clouds until Zipp and her friends discovered a magic cloud - the rainbow clouds - over Maretime Bay .

We don’t know exactly how long it took for magic to disappear, but I think it was gone in an instant.

My best guess is the magic didn’t disappear all at once. Instead it faded away over time. But I agree with you in the statement that Cloudsdale would have completely disintegrated due to the loss of magic. But the Pegasi would have had enough time to effectively float down using their remaining magic before they lost their ability to fly entirely.

I wonder if Cloudsdale literally got poofed away (becuase it’s mainly made up of clouds). It’s the place responsible for all of the weather around the world. When magic was lost, everything there stopped fucntioning. The structure there is made of magical clouds, so it probably went poof in an instant. You gotta feel bad for the pegasi too, because their ability to fly is also powered by magic. So when that was gone, not only did their wings stopped working completely, but they probably fell down a terrible death, depending how high they were above ground.

Cloudsdale was wasted and destroyed due to the loss of magic and Russian forces annihilating the core of cloudsdale but kept it floating with heavy boosters that were powered by batteries 🔋 until magic came back

My assumption is when Cloudsdale fell it fell onto Canterlot. That would have placed the pegasi inhabitants there, caused more riff between the two, and moved the unicorns from their high point because their glorious city is destroyed.

Yeah, me too. To tell you the truth, that makes more sense than Cloudsdale being made entirely out of clouds, at least in my opinion.
Yes, the city was built on clouds, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the building materials were also clouds. If they were enchanted, then normal materials could very well sit on a surface of clouds. At the same time, said city would instantly fall to the ground the moment that the enchantment wore off, or the moment that magic disappeared.
Honestly, I hope we get to see more of this in the series. I would love to know what actually happened to the various G4 cities, including Ponyville, Canterlot, and, yes, Cloudsdale.

Okay, let’s say that they are clouds that were shaped into a city…
In that case, wouldn’t the clouds simply disperse without the magic keeping them together? I mean, in real life clouds are naturally made out of water vapor, and therefore separate really easily (hence why storm clouds rarely stay together for more than a day at most). Now, chances are the clouds of Cloudsdale wouldn’t disperse as quickly as real life clouds would. But we aren’t talking about mere years passing, or even decades. We are talking about centuries passing here! Surely the clouds that made up Cloudsdale would have dissipated long ago, especially with magic having vanished.

It’s not said that cloudsdale itself was magical, as it was just clouds shaped into a city.
Otherwise it would have been noticed by ponies when Cozy Glow (a pegasus herself) tried to remove all magic from Equestria.
And even if it was, maybe some ontological inertia applies.
And indeed, a beautiful drawing.

This is interesting, but my question is this: without magic, how would Cloudsdale remain airborne? I have always assumed that the only reason that Cloudsdale was able to levitate in the air like that was due to the same magic that allowed the Pegasi to fly and stand on the clouds. As such, without that magic, chances are Cloudsdale would have collapsed onto the ground, leaving nothing but rubble behind in its wake. So, considering the events of G5, I think it would be more likely for Sunny and Izzy to come upon the remnants of Cloudsdale lying in a mountain valley, as opposed to Pipp and Zipp finding it high in the sky. After all, even with magic having been restored that doesn’t mean that the remnants of Cloudsdale would have started floating again. With that said, this does make for a beautiful drawing.
