He doesn’t look fearful to me. If he was, he wouldn’t try to aggro the big monster, he’d be trying to shift its attention to the little girl. I don’t think Rusty is afraid of much of anything.

Oh, Lullaby dear, you only “ran away” again cause Rusty did trick you to follow him instead of going to the cabin like Thistle told you to in the first place.
 
And as for you, Rusty, I’m glad you admit that you lied to the Lullaby that Thistle would never entrust a tyrant like you in the first place and Thistle as well as Tempest would ground Lullaby about a week or a month for being disobedient not sent her away forever by taking the little filly away cause of your selfish issues against your cousin and Tempest but anger to make a cloud work is not always the right answer but Lullaby will find a better alternative on how to make the cloud she’s on work then do it your way.
 
Lullaby again will make a lightning strike to make a big fire to scare that big timberwolf but hopefully might make the fire bigger to signal her and Rusty’s location to Thistle, Tempest, and Fireweed.

At least insofar as he knows what other ponies consider worth getting angry over.
 
Also, I don’t know if Rust Wing’s strategy will work here. He’s thinking to do what life did to him and Tempest, hurt them so much that they need to use their anger to get by.

Seems like Rusty has some sense of moral after all
