While I understand that for the show itself, this sort of thing would have been a bit overkill for the target demographic.
That being said, I totally agree that it would have been cool if they had done something like have Rockhoof be shocked when (by random example) one of the students asked to use the restroom and he thought it awful odd they’d ask for a nap during class.
But going back to the question on actual Old English, there are a few fanfics I’ve saved over the years that use it as a tool and I thoroughly enjoy the idea.

Well, the writers didn’t have much of a choice, really. Unrealistic as it is, trying to have them struggle to communicate would have dragged down the story, and they’ve only got twenty two minutes per episode to work with.
