I have a feeling Equestria is on the earth, the same boring single moon planet earth, orbiting around the same sun we got.
Or it was created in a isolated magical realm, built to resemble our earth, with a fake sun, moon and stars to serve a similar function as our. That requires manual operation. Hence needing unicorns to raise and lower them.
