Tchaivosky never got the chance to use the cannons near the Russian cathedral in the 1812 overture for the 70th anniversary of the 1812 war victory against the Napoleon army (and in time for the cathedral’s complete construction). This was due to the assassination of Czar Alexander II, which caused a major setback that only allowed a different smaller orchestra in a tent (w/no cannons) to play near the unfinished cathedral.
