Some improvements over Wii N64 games was Rumble support could finally work, you could customize the controllers, AND suspend/restore save points could work, allowing you to continue exactly from where you were.

The widescreen for DK64 I think only worked for old TVs, because it stretches it out, rather then increase the resolution. (Which the N64 wasn’t capable of.)

The only bad part I remember about the N64 Wii U Virtual Console was that they did something weird with the settings for the lightning on their emulator so the colors were darker then they should be.

Oh and Donkey Kong 64 wasn’t in widescreen even though the game had a built in widescreen (selecting it from the menu just resulted in a squashed image which you couldn’t stretch).

At least I think that’s how it was. It has been while so my memory might be off on that.

My N64 games work fine on WiiU, and I didn’t have lag.
Or are you refering to the control-stick sensitivity that was messed up in earlier releases? (Which wasn’t as precise as the Wii versions, requiring you to push the control stick halfway for it to work.) That was a li’l annoying though they corrected it for some games like Star Fox 64, and F-Zero.

Though “Super Mario 64 DS” works well on a WiiU Game Pad, and TV.

And thank god for that since playing Mario 64 on the Wii U was awful for just how bad the input lag was in that emulation. Same goes for all the N64 games that were available on the Wii U’s virtual console.

In fairness, Super Mario Sunshine & Galaxy probably wouldn’t look much different with a higher polygon count, and I think they kept Super Mario 64 the way it is, because it’s low-polygon style has become kinda familiar with it.

The SNES was a different story, because they were trying to push “better” graphics back then, and experiment with them.

That’s a logical fallacy. “First you said X then you said Y” when the people that said X and the people that say Y were entirely different people.

Yeah, I remember similarly some complained about “Twilight Princess’s” reveal trailer having orchestra music, but the final game had mostly synth music. Even then some complained it didn’t have orchestra music either. Can’t win either way.

Meanwhile, Mario Kart, and Splatoon use actual electric guitars, instruments, mixed with synth sounds, and nobody complains, either mistakenly thinking they’re fully synth, or fully instrumental. Maybe they need to do that more to trick players.

Now that I think about it, I do remember encountering someone who complained about modern 3D Mario games having live orchestral soundtracks like in the Galaxy games & Odyssey, claiming that Mario games shouldn’t use live orchestral osts & that it doesn’t belong in the Mario series, saying things like “This is Mario! Not Star Wars!”

Yeah, as I pointed out in the Sonic forum thread here, it was odd they advertised it as a “Genesis/Megadrive” game, (even the reversable clamshell packaging paper) as it’s graphics/animations/colors/effects are more like what you’d see in a sidescrolling/2D 32-bit Sega Saturn game, and the music quality is more 32-bit CD style.
Even the 3D low-polygon bonus stages look reminiscent of that. It really does feel like a lost Sega Saturn game.

I’ve seen some complain Megaman 7 was 16-bit, instead of 8-bit.

I remember people complaining that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 wasn’t 16-bit, and then later some bashed “Sonic Mania” for looking too “retro,” or “nostalgia pandering.” I swear you can’t win no matter what.

It is worth remembering (This doesn’t make retro games any less good) Most retro games were limited to what they could do. I even saw someone complaining about mario 64 being 3d because more mario was supposed to be 2d.oh he also capcom lazy for making megaman nine 8 bit

Now I wanna play it.

I’ve seen a few, but they’re more rare, same with Zelda. (They dominate the Sonic fandom for some reason.) There’s also some whom argue if the traditional sidescroller Castlevanias, or RPG-ish Metroidvanias are “better,” and such. So there’s always going to be some “new VS old” gamers out there for every series.

I even saw a guy back in the 2000s say Ocarina of Time “sucked,” just because it didn’t have an overhead view… (I’m serious.) I saw another guy even rant about how he hates “Blonde” Link, and wishes they’d bring back brown-haired Link. He also hates blonde Samus. (Guess he’s hair-ist.)

Speaking as a retro-gamer, we can’t expect every game to be like the old ones, and if they only emulated the old ones, they’d be very limited in what they can do. There’s only so much you can do with Mario moving in only 2 directions, (this is why the NewSMB games lost their novelty) or an above-view Link.
