I kind of think that Pinkie was about to take pity on the kid and give him something for free. Maybe take it out of her paycheck later. Then she saw her boss hanging around and came up with a different solution.

Pretty sure it’s because the kid didn’t have enough money for a cake, so she decided to find something that was cheaper and she could afford. Just being nice. Mrs. Cake had nothing to do with it I don’t think. Just Pinkie being Pinkie. Turning on a whim.
I mean, yeah, that was my first thought, but I figured there was possibly more, you know?
