Description

If a baker is given a pile of dog shit and broken glass, it wouldn’t be unreasonable of me to assume that, no matter how good a baker he is, the cake he makes from it won’t be very good.

Background Pony #6232
@Background Pony
I went through a very close parallel process with Princess Cadence.

<trade show images leaked>
“Maybe it’s just for the merchandise, like Léon.”

<Royal Wedding episode is teased>
“Maybe it’s set in a storybook, or in the past.”

<the Mane Six shown at the wedding>
“Maybe they use magic to leap into the storybook. Maybe they use time travel, which they introduced earlier in the season.”

<synopsis released>
“Maybe her ‘dark secret’ is that her wings and/or horn are/is fake.”

<episode airs>
“Well, they technically never said they weren’t fake. I’m sticking with that headcanon.”

“A Canterlot Wedding” turned out to be the worst episode(s) of the show, in my opinion. It was full of clichés ripped right out of bad fanfiction, including an ailecorn OC, a Mane Six family member who appears out of nowhere, blatant continuity errors/retcons (Shining was Twilight’s only friend, and she loves him, but she’d always said that before coming to Ponyville she didn’t have any friends.), and even (at least according to the trading cards) a seventh Element of Harmony.

Unlike Cadence, it looks like this will be poking up in pretty much every episode, and I’m not going to be able to explain away this with sneaky headcanoning unless I jump all the way to “Twilight overexerted herself with magic, and the rest of the show is a coma dream in her head!”. Therefore, I’m pretty much just left with full-fledged Fanon Discontinuity.

The addition of yet another bad fanfic cliché in this story, Twilight’s ascension, has made me realize that the show itself, since Faust left, has essentially been a really well-funded fanfiction.

Again, you don’t know me, I don’t know you, but be sure I have the same fears you have, but I still think the best choice in this situation is waiting for the episode, actually watching it, and then judging it.

I personally detested A Canterlot’s Wedding, particularly because everything good about it was because Cadance wasn’t there (and the writers apparently agreed with that by keeping her the fuck away). Yet, I watched despite knowing that they couldn’t make Cadance interesting, because you can’t dismiss stuff without at least giving them a chance. Cadance will forever remain as that one shitty character which all her interesting bits came from Chrysalis impersonating her, and little else. At least the songs were good.

@Background Pony
No, I haven’t seen the episode, but like I said, I know enough about it from the information that’s been released.

Far from “everything being shit until proven otherwise”, I’ve taken the exact opposite approach. I’ve been telling myself for months “Hey, maybe it’s chocolate fudge and rock candy!”. Unfortunately, the benefit of the doubt has limits determined by the amount of doubt that is available.

@sapphire475gs
Your last paragraph is exactly what I fear. It’s sounding like G4.5 is going to be “The Twilight Sparkle Show, feat. those other ponies”, which isn’t what I want in my pony.

I’m fine if you’re okay with that. The quality of a show is, ultimately, a subjective question. We all have our own tastes. But that’s exactly my point: everyone likes different things about the show.

Continue to watch the show if you want, but don’t act like anyone who doesn’t is taking a cartoon too seriously or making a mountain out of a molehill. It’s very simple, actually. We’ren’t in love with the title of the show. If the show evolves/mutates/is corrupted into something different from the show we know and love, it’s completely reasonable of us to stop watching.
Background Pony #86D3
@Background Pony
Well, let us be honest, we haven’t seen it. I am of the camp this needs to bring a change to the formula from the slice-of-life of before for it to make sense, but I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt before saying everything explodes into a million little pieces and we are at the cusp of something horrible.

Do yourself a favor and watch it. If it is permanent, and if it is mishandled, enjoy the previous episodes and be happy. But if it is a good thing, you are going to be missing out.

I understand you concern, I hold them myself, but I rather think that they might have a good reason for Princess Diana to be living on my neighborhood and everyone acting like she was Jane Doe. Watch and see.

Or use the Zero Punctuation mantra of everything being shit until proven otherwise.

@-_-_-_-_-
One of the things that gets on my nerves is how everyone acts like I’m jumping to conclusions, or being alarmistly pessimistic.

On the contrary, I’m almost pathologically optimistic, always giving the highest possible level of benefit of the doubt. The problem is that as more previews are coming out, I’m there’s less and less doubt to work with.

When the first trade show image came out, I though maybe it was just a goofy mistake. When the plushies started showing up, I thought “Well, the merch and the show don’t always match up.”. When the episode was teased, I thought maybe it was another princess, or maybe it’s temporary. When the synopsis came out, I and I read the theory, I thought maybe it was because she’d switched destinies with a princess. When it was revealed to be an intentional ascension because of her writing her own magic, I went back to thinking maybe she’d give it up at the end of the episode to stay with her friends.

Now, the information that’s been revealed had made it clear that it is Twilight, and it’s probably permanent, and she’s staying with her friends as a princess. That’s a dog poo cake I don’t have to sample to know it’s gonna suck. Larson may be able to raise it from -10 stars to -5 stars, but that’s not enough to save it for me.

Personally, I won’t be watching it when it airs. I’ll look online afterwards to see whether it’s permanent. If it’s not, I’ll download the episode and go about my regular pony activities. If it is permanent, I’m filtering “alicorn Twilight”, and will consider S03E12 to be the last episode.

To understand something doesn’t mean you have to find it justified.

I know many fear the end of the series and believe the very fact of a character becoming an alicorn threatens to drive a wedge between her friends and herself. BUT, I believe the friendship they share is a valuable asset to Equestria. The Elements of Harmony MUST be allowed to gather in a state of emergency. I believe even the writers can see that the princesses will have to keep that priority in mind as Twilight enters princess-hood. Finding another Element of Magic would not be easy. In-universe, it’s a bad move to separate the six, which means Princess Celestia and Luna probably have this figured out, somehow. You don’t send your student to make friends only to ignore that later down the line after employing all of them for tasks on five occasions (six if you include livening up the Grand Galloping Gala).

I know that it may also appear to you that slice-of-life is out of the question with this development, or that long-life will have to haunt Twilight long after her friends age. BUT, we don’t even understand completely the circumstances under which Celestia and Luna have managed to exist for as long as they have. Perhaps they were both normal aged when Luna was encroached upon, and then after the banishment, Celestia wanted to live to see and deal with her sister again when 1000 years had passed, so she prevented her aging somehow. And as for Luna, maybe her banishment was similar to stasis, preventing aging but not actually extending her conscious lifespan. These are theories, but they also cannot be countered, just like the “immortal alicorn” idea.

I know many find Mary Sues distasteful by principle, and believe that is precisely what is happening to Twilight. BUT, we know Twilight still has her flaws and that she will remain herself even as she attains a position of royalty. There is something else to consider, though… at some point in human history, somebody had to be the Mary Sue. Kings and Queens have come into those positions by any number of ways, even though it is usually a birthright. Nobility, once upon a time, was attained through deeds and actions that proved worth, not by your father’s blood. Also, royalty ≠ overpowered. If you thought Celestia was an absolute goddess, you were debunked already by Chrysalis. Sombra also heavily pressured Princess Cadence… his power as a “mere” unicorn was a force to be reckoned with. Twilight wouldn’t have stood a chance, and she still might not if it came to another confrontation.

I know the pretense of all this was to sell a new toy, which kicks the creator-driven aspect that partly catalyzed all this in the first place. BUT, so was the very creation of the show and those before it. It’s why that one article about “the end of the creator-driven era” was published that catalyzed this whole affair. But then Lauren and a set of writers came in with an overall vision for the show. That vision was revolutionary, “defy stereotypical content in a girl’s show and drive forward a bit more maturity, realism, and personality that shows that personhood and life aspirations have no gender. Let there be a world not entirely made of candy and rainbows, but with believable, functioning parts, and a mix of science and fantasy.” This can and (because I believe in M.A. Larson) WILL remain after alicornization of a single character. It is simple because you only are looking at the shifting of a single variable. The whole world doesn’t come CRASHING DOWN because of this. If anything, it should have done so because Pinkie Pie breaks through the fade-out demanding that flash object she calls a mouth.

I know there were hints that Lauren Faust may have had other plans for Twilight and many believe her word is the “Word of God” as far as Equestria is concerned. BUT, she said it herself… she’s not calling the shots. Other people do that now. The writers do it, the managing staff does it, Hasbro has always had the ultimate say in it, but they luckily only demanded a single element to add to the mix. There is no bible for the Equestrian universe except what actually happens. If you think otherwise, you can have your headcanon and take it to the community animators and voice actors to start your own offshoot series rather than complain about a fictional series you have no control over. We are powerful enough of a community to make that kind of stuff happen now.

I know that you think this is as salvageable as “dog shit and broken glass” as the duck stated. BUT, I don’t even think changing Twilight into a DONKEY would be as bad as that. In fact, whoa, there are all sorts of interesting challenges that could await her if that happened. No magic, now the butt of many jokes, might not be as nimble as before, but the same brilliant mind. I only wonder what writers could do with her being in position of solemn responsibility as a princess… managing crises, solving unique problems she never even considered, resolving disputes at national levels, finding a way to manage time between friends and work (actually quite equivalent to play and study at school, when you think about it a moment… who says it still isn’t for kids?), the possibilities are there. Writers with brilliance will see them and use them over the span of the episodes in the fourth season, I’ll bet on it once we’re certain what’s actually going to happen for Twilight.

@BroDash
Yeah, at least give it a chance to actually suck. and why you put quotes around that? She hasn’t appeared even in the background, and there is no sign that is going to be changing.
BroDash

if pple are leaving the fandom cause of twicorn,then fairwell to them as for me im curious to see how they pull it off…i havent see this much rage since Derpys ‘disappearance’.
F

Remember when people promised to quit the fandom after the royal wedding, because introducing a new alicorn would destroy the fandom?
If they had kept their promise, we would have had less drama this month.

Thread Starter - The evil council continuation

the thing that make me worry the most if that this kind of transformation and the switch to linear story could only lead to a quest that with end up with something like a grand final that will close the serie.

It would have be much more accepted after more seasons or if twilight had a longer evolution instead of bringing that in a season where she didn’t do much. She defeat both king sombra and Trixie without magically fighting them directly, Discord was reformed by Fluttershy and the remaining episodes turned around others characters.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

From my point of view, this is what’s going on:

They announced this beforehand so people would concoct the worse possible alternatives. When that occurs, the people who are ambivalent will go “well, at least it wasn’t as bad as these guys were saying” and those that were saying will go “well, I admit I was wrong” which will cloud the issue if the story was shit or not.

However, we still don’t know, and that’s pretty much it.

I think I might actually prefer the show shifting its focus to them trying to keep things going on as they were but with Twilight as an Alicorn.

It will, as you say, still be the end of the show as we know it, and I’ll be pretty sad about that, but it might at least produce something entertaining of its own.
