True, but let’s be fair, they’ve redeemed so many villains, that it caused criticism to come from some fans, not to mention the lackluster ending of season 7 might’ve been another factor in the writers deciding not to redeem them.
Nice.
oh my godddddd i love that it makes me tempted to write a fic with that premise. That kind of arc would work So Well with Chrysalis
Funny thing, when I first watched the scene in Frenemies where those three got a genuine taste of friendship, and they were talking about making their own plan against Grogar while playing the part of loyal minions, this is where I thought Season 9 was going.
Then in the finale when Grogar was revealed to have been Discord, my thought was that this double twist would turn out to have been that Discord under the guise of Grogar was always pushing the idea of Chrysalis, Cozy Glow, Tirek, and initially Sombra to work together in the hope that they would experience the spark of friendship the same way Fluttershy’s saint-like tolerance of him when he was making a total ass of himself allowed him to experience the spark of friendship, and then later realize that it was something that, once found was too precious to give up.
When I had that thought, I in turn came to the conclusion that the team-building exercise that was the scaling of Mount Everhoof was intended to be the point where the spark of friendship lit inside the three, and that Discord couldn’t have predicted that Chrysalis would reject it after having just experienced it. This whole thought of mine of what Discord was doing as Grogar was further cemented in my mind when Discord confessed to the Mane 6 that he made ‘the tiniest boo boo’, that was ‘well intended’, and I had just finished applauding the MLP staff for a surprisingly well executed double twist that, in hindsight there were subtle hints for like all of ‘Grogar’s’ pushing for the three to learn to work together, but then as I finished applauding the show staff the scene shift to the throne room happened, I heard the actual reason, my jaw dropped, then I dropped my head and shook it in utter disappointment.
I feel like my idea would have had a much better reception giving the overarching theme in the show of giving second chances and taking every opportunity to show those who rejected friendship how much better it can be. If Discord had tried to show these villains friendship and thus reform them, giving them the same gift Fluttershy gave him, but just failed to account for everything since his very nature would sabotage any planning he did personally, then the attempt would fall right in line with the kind of character change in former villains some of the more analytical fans, like DWK for instance who’s been very vocal on this regarding Discord, regard as being the end of a reformation ark. The desire to spread the friendship they were given is what such fans seem to feel constitutes redemption, and honestly I think I jumped on that band wagon some time before Season 9, which would explain why I was so excited when I thought I’d recognized what the show was doing with Discord, and then subsequently so very disappointed when I realized what they were actually doing, and how despite the difference in intent, the feel of the plan just feels so like the douche that is freshly reformed Discord who never moved on to redemption. And no, the Season 4 finale was not Discord’s redemption. It was his true reformation
>runs off
>struggles to function on her own
>moves into a little town somewhere, disguised
>harvests love to feed herself
>feeding one changeling is a lot easier than feeding hundreds
>in order to not arouse suspicion, she only takes a little off the top
>she finds that ponies are more willing to toss love her way if she’s nice to them
>she also finds that ponies generate more love if you don’t drain them completely
>her persona makes friends to secure a consistent source of love
>her pony persona spends a lot of time with her pony friends, even giving a little love back if they’re upset or injured
>chrysalis can maintain her disguise indefinitely due to an abundance of love
>this is so easy
>the intense, painful hunger she had felt for eons just isn’t there anymore
>she feels better than she ever has in her life
>she can actually live, not just survive
>it’s been so long since she shapeshifted into her true form that she almost forgets what it looks like
>that black monster that was always starving and had to lie, steal, and hurt every day just to stay alive
>she’s afraid to change back
>she’s afraid to go back
>that’s not what she wants to be anymore
>she doesn’t want to feel like that ever again
>the idea of that horrifying visage and black, broken chitin makes her sick to her stomach
>the idea of having to go back to that constant hunger, anger, fear, and sadness terrifies her
>one day, out of curiosity, but with great reluctance, she drops her disguise and looks at herself in her mirror
>but now she feels relieved
>she almost starts crying
>this is confirmation that she has left that misery behind
>maybe thorax will give her another chance
Even in such a scenario Chrysalis would never choose redemption. Her entire character is rooted in malevolence, selfishness and pride. I go as far to say that friendship, itself, is a toxic concept for her that undermines everything she wants in the world. You’ll remember she was the first of the three to denounce friendship and call it a plague in Frienemies. She is an antithesis to friendship.
Anybody who says otherwise does not fully grasp the scope of her character as it was demonstrated across her six appearances in the show. She is not a tragic villain, she is a well-designed monster who not only steps on others to get what she wants, but absolutely relishes in doing it. Chrysalis is the least redeemable villain in all of Gen 4.

Would’ve been better if Chrysalis, Tirek, Cozy and the real Grogar had fought against the mane 6 and everyone, they would’ve got defeated, Grogar was banished and the three would’ve been spared to make a decision of either they pick death or redeem.
