yep
Same here.
Starlight felt forced at first but grew on me.
I pretty much feel the same way. I like Sunset more, but I really can’t see why that means I can’t like Starlight too.
That being said yeah, I like Sunset Shimmer more. Starlight Glimmer eventually grew on me. Probably because I liked her friendships. I felt like in S9 she found her place on the show and stopped feeling forced.
then tell that angrybrony guy that he’s dismissing criticism too by namecalling. seriously, no side’s perfect here.
Those things do matter because they directly contradict what was established in the show prior to her introduction. Her very existence as a powerful unicorn that never even went to Celestia’s school went unexplained for the entirety of the show and thus makes her a low quality character that doesn’t fit within the universe of MLP:FiM. And having conflicts resolved by Starlight just for the sake of giving her more screentime whilst simultaneously robbing other characters of having a moment to solve their own conflicts is objectively bad. Denying that Shadow Play for example would benefit from Twilight questioning Starswirl and convincing Stygian on her own without Starlight’s hamfisted involvement in the plot would simply be you defending bad writing. This is the kind of behavior that I’ve come to expect from Glimmer’s fans though, they do whatever they can to dismiss criticism of their waifu as something that “doesn’t matter” when in fact it’s the very foundation of her character and the role that she plays throughout the series that’s being discussed.

What a load of nonsense. Way to make a giant list of things that either don’t matter (“waah Starlight has strong magic while only one pony in the world is allowed to have strong magic, waah Starlight wasn’t punished just like almost everyone else on the show” or aren’t true (“OBJECTIVELY worse backstory, episodes would OBJECTIVELY be improved” - if anything is true, it’s the opposite). GG. Marks for effort.
@Angrybrony
Where did I say that only I know how the elements work? I said that nobody really knows. They have a different approach for almost every case they’re used in. And of course I don’t fucking think Sunset was actually canonically brainwashed, don’t be ridiculous. I’m just saying her “reformation” might as well have been a brainwash because it’s so instant, happens when she is hit by the elements, and we don’t see even an iota of why or how she changed her mind.
@Angrybrony
wow, rude.
I never saw the last one if this was done before. It annoys me no matter which way it’s done.
What was the saying about stones and glass houses?
okay… So im out, playing something or else. :)
Just dont take this issue too seriously.
Only one of those kinda fans here, bud.
I don’t believe in perfect characters.
BTW i see enough of this Sunset is perfect meme to know whats happening. Directly from the sunset fans. :D
Honestly, it’s never actually clear just how strong the shield is.
Just that it’s really big.
Characters in other shows have been able to make large shields, but they weren’t necessarily very strong shields.
That princess level problem is a key position for her, because she has the ability to remove cutiemarks. But, she says she didnt wanted to swap the magic, it just happens.
The show explains how is she so strong in magic, she is like a monk, which is advantage to learning, when do magic training day by day instead of reading books for example. She does not understand a lot of stuff but learned to use magic.
What do you think, Shining armor how has that strong shield magic that he can defend a whole city against the changlings? Isnt it too high level power compared to twilights? And if there is one strong character, cant be out there more?
even then he’d have to watch the EQG stuff to get the best picture.
i just fucking hate people that talk like they know shit but just know jack shit.
Edited
There’s no need to get aggressive about it.
I also agree with you on the Sunset thing though.
Not just that, but EQG was originally meant to be entirely her story, but they decided against it.
While Friendship Games is my favorite EQG (Rainbow Rocks is overrated and I can go into several reasons why) it did introduce Sci-Twi, who later they decided to make a forefront cause they wanted Twi to be in the foreground again, they did this in Legend of Everfree. Also they gave Rebecca Shoichet/Sunset Shimmer second billing in Friendship Games behind Sci-Twi.
Then no offense to you, but you can’t properly judge Sunset’s character.
Unless someone literally lists off to you every detail about her.
then shut the fuck up if you don’t even know what your talking about.
nice straw man.
when sunset fans say she’s perfect that’s not what they mean.
if anything starlight is the biggest writers pet in the show: gets about half a dame season to herself, she gets to be called by the table to fix princess lvl problems. is as strong as alicorn twilight and better at magic then her at some point, gets to be the one that leads twi school after she becomes a ruler.
shimmer does get anything like that, hell she barely gets solo focus in her own spin off, fuck glimmer bamfs in at one point to be the focus and single handedly wins in said spin-off.
Sunset is a bit hard case, cause clearly a writer’s favorite character. They try to kick out twilight from the friendship is magic line, which is strange to me.
But thats all, I dont choose a side, i dont watch EqG, so dont really know how “hard” is the thing for sunset.
Both the things you stated sound like you group everyone together.
Starlight is also irrational and has a bad temper, but she also struggles to understand friendship in some degrees. In this way, she’s written better than Sunset. Sunset kind of understood friendship once her character took off in FG, and entirely understood it.
Starlight to this day (minus the series finale) struggled to understand some aspects of friendship. She tried to brute force her methods at times and it backfired every time.
Neither character is perfect, both have their flaws, some are written worse in areas than the other.
If you give a short synopsis of both stories though it makes them both look badly written which simply isn’t the case.
