She turns good because she realizes that giving up on friendship just because of some differences was a bad idea. Twilight caused her to see that she was looking at things all wrong.

I disagree entirely. You’re free to like Sunset and you’re free to dislike Starlight. But please don’t assume that people would stop liking her if she wasn’t “shoved down the audience’s throats”.
 
I like Starlight on her own merits, for numerous reasons. One big reason is I like her personality. I think she’s sincere, funny, and very likable, and her issues with her temper are (somewhat) realistic and relatable.
 
I also like Sunset. But I definitely agree with Supes that Sunset’s reformation was poorly done. She becomes a demon, gets hit with friendship rainbow lasers, comes to her senses in a crater, and is instantly remorseful?

Put Sunset in show, where she should have been from day one, and it becomes 100 times better, as Sunset is 100 times the pony Starlight will ever be, and there’s absolutely nothing that Starlight does that Sunset couldn’t have done 100 times better. Take Starlight away from the show and give her own spin-off to star on, restricting her screentime and taking away the audience’s obligation to see her, and she’s forgotten within one year. Once she’s no longer shoved down the audience’s throats, and people are freed from the obligation of pretending she’s interesting because “it’s the show” and people are in denial and cannot admit that the staff made a serious mistake, the reality that she’s a wholly bland, uninteresting character that doesn’t have much to offer surfaces.

Better than having the world’s worst backstory and the world’s most poorly done reformation. I love Starlight, but go back and re-watch episode 26 of season 5. She only turns good because the episode is running out of time, no actual reason to it.

The thing that sticks out to me is that because Sunset before (at her worst), the images are backwards no matter how you look at it.

I didn’t even know that things like not having a personality, having a nonexistent backstory, boring motives, being brainwashed by lasers instead of a proper reformation, and ultimately going nowhere as a character were considered upgrades. Wild.
