I have been fortunate enough to meet Lauren Faust, and I made a point out of thanking her for Rarity, because, as I said to her “she would be an antagonist on any other show”. Ms. Faust’s response: “Thank you, I’m very proud of her.” She should be. Rarity is spectacular.

I would like to add I love the way she fights. In any other cartoon, a character like her would hide behind a box, whinning about a broken nail, hitting a distracted foe from behind with a flower vase or using magic in a rather quirky way. But not her. No, Rarity charges forward an beats the crap out of her opponents with her bare hoves.

TBH the first MLP episode i saw was “Bird in a hoof” and the second i saw her i knew she was a rich bitch.  
I also was 100% sure AJ was supposed to be the token male (no manners altogether).

Yes, but those kind of characters are more prominent in media (there’s even a tropes for that), so it loses some impact.

I always found Rainbow Dash on the same level. Tomboy characters are usually the bullies. Dash was one for awhile, but she’s been growing.
 
Heck, all the characters are unique.

I adore Rarity because she manages to pull off a seemingly impossible combination of being both, fucking adorable and, at times, legitimately feminine and sensual (and not at all moe, a la Fluttershy), all in “official” canon.
 
Speaking of character depth, pretty much half of mane6 could qualify for the “show for little girls villain”. And, if you stretch your imagination far enough, all of them could.

The short answer: They save the day with each other. There are some things you can’t do without making some friends along the way. Saving the day happens to be one of them.

But she’s generous. All her money probably goes into her boutique or treating her friends and generally well…

That’s really what she seems to be. A feminine artist.

Imagine a bunch of friends:  
A monarch’s favourite, with a high-ranking military brother and a noble sister in law.  
A country girl, with a passion for hard work and things that grow  
An independant entrepaneur, who loves fashion and runs her boutique, probably wealthy.  
A girl who lives far from home, works and lives with a couple, who enjoys the mundane aspects of life.  
A tomboyish girl who thirsts for victory in every aspect.  
A quiet altruist who looks after animals…

I actually feared for her to be stereotypical “FASHIONZ” when I started watching the show. Even when she can be snobby and fashiony, she is really dynamic and hits the breaks to show that she’s a generous character.
