Such as Rainbow Dash not admitting to her cheerleading squad that she wants to coach the Buckball team instead? A lot of episodes in kids/family cartoons use this type of story as well.

I don’t really see it as nullifying the lesson. This was about putting aside your pride and learning to respect other peoples interests even if you don’t find them particularly appealing. Especially don’t try to put them down or mock them because you don’t find them worthy of respect.
