Agreed on the mermaids. They used to kill sailors or anyoe else they could for fun in some old stories. Sometimes they ate them, too.

Originally in Greek mythology, Sirens had the body of a bird and the head of a woman(The game Kid Icarus actually used a depiction similar to this). Just like what this image displayed, they did hang around rocks in the middle of the ocean(although they often flew around scouting for victims to lure in).
 
I remember someone thought I was confusing them with Harpies, but that’s not the case. Harpies tend to be in more mountainous areas inland and weren’t known for being beautiful.
 
Somewhere along the way, sirens were depicted as looking like mermaids, although I’m not exactly sure when.
 
Mermaids weren’t necessarily considered good in old tales either. Some would try to lure seafarers out of their boats and into the ocean. In other cases, they’d try to drag them in.

Yeah, i’ve always been asking myself the difference between sirens and mermaids. I kinda think that sirens are the bad ones and mermaids are the good ones.
